In 1968 he was graduated from the Richmond Professional Institute , where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. He is also a graduate of the University of Virginia, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in art history and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art history . In 1992-1993 he was the Dorothy K. Hohenberg Chair of Excellence in Art History in the Art Department at Memphis State University . He taught the history of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art at the University of Missouri, Columbia from 1974 until he retired in 2015. He has published several books and numerous articles on Italian Renaissance art and art literature.
