More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/ This was a very hard graphic novel to get into. The writing felt heavy handed and each scene seemed to be plotted specifically to make a point or statement rather than a story. As a result, the story never grew organically and the segues were abrupt and missing vital information. Ironically, since this felt more of a soapbox than a plot, by the end I was wondering, "What was the point of that?"Story: Basil focused all
Something I picked up on prime reading, Lost on Planet Earth is the science fiction story of two young women (though there are more characters it centres around) and their lives as they go into the almost mandatory earth military. The art is lovely, the story in places heart breaking, other times philosophical and it is very obviously a work of love. It felt a little rushed, especially from the time jump between issue four and five but then for a comic that is only five volumes I think it that wo...
It was more about Catholicism than it was about Star Trek, but it was better for that.
Not my thing... Just didn't catch me.
This was actually a sad story 😕Mel 🖤🐶🐺🐾
Loved this story! It works for me both as an alternate take on the Federation’s militarism and on the metaphorical level of figuring out what you really want (and what it costs, and also what it costs to deny your true self). Claudia Aguirre’s art has a great energy.
I love the drawings. I also love how there is a good amount of queer representation and how it reflects sort of the history and stigmas that we have today. However, it’s a very forgettable story and i feel like it wasn’t executed well. I feel like it all happened way too quickly and I just don’t feel like the character would make such a decision so rapidly especially with not really knowing too much. It’s easy to get in the “wrong crowd” but I just feel like there wasn’t enough room for Basil to...
A Futuristic Sapphic RomanceThis was an interesting story about two women who have their whole lives ahead of them, their plans to join the Military and hopefully some day live near each other. Then one day, things don't go quite as planned and their lives take different paths.Told in different points of view, it's a combo of lost love found love, connections, adventures and how Life has its own twists that can turn out to be sometimes what is needed.
3.5 starsNot what I expected though I appreciate the thought and messaging of this story. Having read the vague synopsis (figuring out what you want) and the introduction’s inspiration (Star Trek assimilationism and 2020-onwards social justice movements), I thought this would focus much more on the world building and role of the Fleet. It’s really the story of our side characters figuring out what they want out of life after our MC has a total breakdown during exams and goes on a minor rebelliou...
I read this book via Kindle Unlimited. This book starts with Basil training for the test that will change her life, she's training to join the interplanetary fleet but when she suddenly realises this isn't what she wants, she runs. She runs straight into a revolution, she meets Velda and things change from there. This comic series kind of is like if Star Trek was mixed with rebellion, individually thinking characters, revolutions and beautifully diverse characters. This comic has a somewhat bi
Utterly beautiful. Brutally heart-wrenching. I have only just finished it, and am not really in a state where I can leave a coherent review, though when I come back to give a proper one, I feel I will leave this part here, because it emphasizes just how affecting the story is...
🎀 What Comes to Mind™ 2021 (WCtM™) winning book for February at Weaponized Pineapples — Prompt: It's The Little Things 🎀 🌟 4.5 Stars 🌟 I wish it would have been made into a longer novel so it could have gone into some more detail on some of the themes and issues it touches on. Even so, this was fantastic!
A comic which "started out of some idle affectionate criticism of Star Trek" but, even to this Trek-hater's eye, has stacked the deck a little too much to make it land by hybridising the set-up with visions of the future such as the acknowledged Starship Troopers (only fleet veterans get the vote) and the unmentioned Judge Dredd (exile to Titan is the fate of those who let the system down). I like the idea of 'the economy' as something mentioned with shudders, the place where the underclass must...
I loved this what if style alternate star trek universe. Where perhaps the federation was in fact a creepy thing. Because I never really thought of their socialist utopia as kinda evil before but it definitely made some good points, particularly around colonization and how other races get treated. Then there was also the personal element of life changes to it. Which I found very relatable. As someone who grew up thinking one thing was the whole truth and then realising no actually it's wrong, I
?? That ending though ??
Man, i really liked this. Turns out to be something very different than i thought. As Visaggio said, this a "Star Trek" story, where a human, that has trained all her life to become a member of the Federation or the Star Fleet, just decided that this will not happen. And suddenly, do something against it.It's a nice plot and the story rolls very well. I thought that the plot was a little too fast for me, but you can understand this while reading about Basil's life. She is always waiting for tomor...
**2.5**
I'll start with what I enjoyed about the story. The world and plot was set up really well, starting from page one. The conflicts within Basil and the place she's at in her life felt so relatable, and all of the characters around her felt realistic. I was so invested in seeing where things went for her, I sped through the first half of this book in one sitting (then forced myself to stop for bed). I'm not much of a Trekkie myself (I've only ever watched Discovery) though the story made some solid
Well I liked this, but I’d have liked it a lot more if there was more story. Everything was just skimmed over.
This story hit me where I live in so many ways.
