Regarding the Death of My Father

Regarding the Death of My Father

Kathryn Bertoni
0/5 ( ratings)
None of us want to say goodbye to our parents. Most of us spend several decades under the protective umbrella of those who brought us into this world. Losing them is too painful to think of, so we avoid the subject. This is natural, but it also means that when the terrible moment arrives, we are ambushed by it. Having not thought about the real meaning of their mortality, we don't know how to react. Our emotions are confused. Questions arise: who holds the power of attorney, who can make decisions when they are incapacitated, who can access their financial records, how much debt do they have, what bills need to be paid? Facing the death of a parent means facing two very different things: the emotional turmoil, but also the legal ramifications. Too often, the one gets in the way of the other. My father was my best friend. Losing him hurt then, and it still hurts now. The pain never truly leaves us. Yet saying these goodbyes are a part of life, and we need to be ready. Everything we want to say to them, and everything we need to hear from them, we need to think of while they are with us. Do it now. Say it now. Talk to them now. We all have less tomorrows than we would like to believe. Here is my personal story. In it's details, it is as unique as any family is unique. Yet in its general outlines, here is a story that everyone of us must eventually experience.
