d with General Sherman during the Atlanta Campaign. During Reconstruction, he partnered with Tennessee's Governor, William Brownlow. As commander of the Tennessee State Guard, Cooper endeavored to bring order to the state and protect freedman's right to vote by opposing the newly formed Ku Klux Klan.
