Meet Addie, a young girl who uses a wheelchair to get around. Today, you are going to spend the day with Addie. You are going on a trip to the zoo! But this zoo isn't like the others, in fact it is a zoo for animals with disabilities. I give this book a five star rating because it really opens the conversation between adult and children surrounding disabilities. Each page you encounter a new animal who has a new disability. These disabilities can be found in people all over, and it is very impor...
Love the concept, the presentation and the illustrations. Perfect!
Addie’s Story Shines!Addie’s story shines through these brightly colored pages of animal friends! This is a great read-together book for parents or grandparents to share with the special children in their lives! As each animal is introduced, an opportunity is presented to discuss physical differences and how special equipment helps the animal to play with friends. Super book!
Brava for Authentically Addie!Addie's visit to the zoo turns out to be one cool adventure as we see and meet various animals with very different disabilities. But just like Addie, their disabilities doesn't stop them from being who they are and they show it through their fun lifestyles. This book was vibrant, funny, and awfully sweet -- and should definitely be included in everyone's bookshelves! I can't wait for more of Addie's adventures in the future.
Amazing Authentically Addie!!My daughter absolutely adores this book. She is 9 and was born with several different Congenital Heart Defects. When she came to the part about the Andean Bear having a zip she was made up! I would like to say thank you for making her feel special and helping her to learn about other disabilities that children also have to live with. Amazing!!!!
Beautiful!Such a treat! Written with insite and sensitivity. The illustrations are engaging. This book, as a whole, is helpful for all to understand and accept our differences and similarities and to know that we all belong.
A book for feeling included and appreciatedEvery child (and adult) wants to feel like they have a place, are loved, and positively recognized for who they are. What is so beautiful about Addie’s story in Authentically Addie is that we can learn to appreciate the things that make each creature unique while also breaking down the stigmas. Instead of feeling isolated, Authentically Addie is a story of inclusion, appreciation, and celebration.
Sweet & easy for little ones to understand I absolutely love how Stephanie used animals to explain several ways we could all be different. I was in a car crash 21 years ago so I have to use a wheelchair. I am also a substitute teacher, so kids love to ask me questions all the time. This will definitely be my go to gift for teacher friends and new expecting moms. I plan on reading this book to younger students when I guest teach. - Priscilla
Wonderful Introduction to Disabilities for Children I loved this book because it was a wonderful introduction to a wide variety of disabilities for children. From blindness and albinism to Cerebral Palsy and Down Syndrome, Authentically Addie does a wonderful job of describing each animal’s personality and disability. I loved that each animal was celebrated for what they are good at, because an individual should never be defined by their disability. It is a part of who they are, not the entirety...
Addie goes to a zoo and meets animals that are different like her too.
wonderful book celebrating differences This is a great children’s book. It will help children understand that we’re all different and it’s nothing to be scared of. We can learn to interact with and include others better by understanding the differences.
So Adorable! This book was absolutely adorable! Both my sons (8 and 21 months) were interested. It was a lot longer than I expected, but I didn't want it to end. The pictures were beautiful and we loved learning about the animals.
This story is about a young girl named Addie who uses a wheelchair to get around. Addie spends the time at the zoo but this zoo isn't like the rest. This zoo is for animals with disabilities. I give this book a 5 star rating. I believe that this story opens up the conversation between adults and children surrounding disabilities. This book is nice to show that each animal has different disabilities.
This book is a must read. For ALL childrenAs a mother of two kids with disabilities, I am always concerned about how much their friends and classmates will understand and respect. One of my sons is autistic and reading this book, when we saw Flappy he yelled (and of course stimmed!) mama like me! We have so many family members who are wheelchair users or have other disabilities including diabetes and ADD and I cannot begin to articulate the power of seeing ones self on the book pages. I CANNOT w...
A Beautiful Story to Share with Your LittlesThe story and illustrations are absolutely beautiful. This is the perfect book to help introduce our littles to the many differences that make us each so special. I love the gentle dialogue, and the inclusion that this book promotes. We will surely be reading it again and again.
This is amazingThis might be a kids book, but as a senior, I LOVE IT! It shows how people with disabilities are are no less than anyone else. I can't wait for another adventure.
