Wow. After my rant on Batman 106, I need to back up in admiration of Tynion's storytelling here. It opens like a Constantine book and March's art is on point. The panels and lettering allow the reader to sink into the story and appreciate the nods to Gordon's past without overtly tedious reminders or explanations. The more you know about Gordon's history with Joker, the more this will resonate. For once, there's not too much narration or exposition. This style of narrative has suited several tit...
I never planned on reading this, because I don't really care about the Joker. But then I saw a review which said two things: 1) it focuses on Jim Gordon (whom I love) and 2) Punchline is in it (Whom I love). So yeah, I had to read it. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't spectacular. Jim Gordon looked old and worn out, which was perfect for this. The rich lady looked a bit off.. "people say wealth corrupts .. but it doesn't" she says while trying to bribe a good man to abandon his principles and do somet...
A good beginning with plenty of potential. Hiring the former police commissioner to get the Joker! Let's see where this story goes.
Brilliant start and the Punchline story is an added bonus
Honestly I very nearly didn't pick this up, and I put off reading it for a long time. So I was shocked by how much I liked it! James Tynion IV always hots right with his writing, I'll never doubt him again.
Joker story: 5⭐I'm really surprised just how much I loved this, as I very nearly didn't even pick it up. I'm tired of The Joker, I've got Joker fatigue after the last two years... But... This issue was more of a Jim Gordon story, and a damn good one at that. Punchline backup: 2⭐There's not much to it. It's just the same story they've been dragging on since her debut. You can tell they debuted her with no real plan, as this court case has been going on FOREVERRR.I also feel kinda uneasy reading s...
This was FREAKING epic! I mean I really really enjoyed this. I know that this is titled Joker, but this is definitely a Jim Gordon story centered around his experience with Joker and how the Joker haunts him. Just the atmosphere surrounding this book is enough to make anybody love it. I don't have much working knowledge of Gotham because I have a tendency to avoid Batman comics, but I'm telling you this made me want to know everything about Gotham and Jim Gordon. After losing so much to The Joke...
5 stars! I hate Punchline as a name because it is a little too on the nose. However, I like the way her arc has been portrayed in the comics. I like her overall look. It's memorable, fun and it feels unique. This issue has two stories. The first story follows Jim Gordon. Jim is approached and is asked to assassinate the Joker. While Jim is considered the shining beacon of Gotham, the Joker has taken so much from him. The fact that Jim still keeps his morality after being psychologically tortured...
Good start to the new series. Fittingly ominous and tense. I like the use of Jim Gordon's perspective to tell the story. The Punchline story felt more like a refresher of the events that happened in her one-shot issue way back when with little progression of a story or her character. Meh with some great artwork though.
I have to admit, when I first saw that we were getting a Joker comic series I wasn't very excited by it. Whilst I like the Joker as a villain I think that he's a character best used sparingly, and one who I don't want to know much about. I don't want to see how he puts his plans together, what he does when he's not tormenting Gotham, and I certainly don't want a concrete origin for the character. As such, I was worried about what the Joker series was going to be. I didn't need to be worried, how...
I liked it! I thoroughly enjoy comics with two stories each so there’s something for everyone, and I was especially drawn to the Punchline court case. As much as I don’t like stuff centered around cops, this comic seemed to highlight the trauma Jim Gordon faced due to his past job which was interesting to see. I really like that it doesn’t feature the Joker much because his story has been dragged for forever and we need room for other characters. I liked the casual gay rep in the second part too...
I really loved the focus of Jim Gordon and his oem battle with the Joker and trauma throughout the years, I think Joker works better in the shadows and this issue really shines through with that. I am super excited to see where we go with Gordon and Joker and who Cressida is. "It's either live free or die mad about it"I think this quote represents Punchline's attitude very well. She will die on her ideology, that saying these ten pages were very short, trying to cover Harper/Blackbird, Cullen, L...
The main Joker story with the setup is fantastic and really looks like this has the potential to be a very very good series. The Punchline backup, however, is pretty bog standard and is the real letdown of the issue.
A great beginning to a Joker series! This sounded like the dark noir story I never knew I needed, so I am very intrigued to go along for the ride!
The Joker #1 is written James Tynion IV and Sam Johns with art by Guillem March and Mirka Andolfo.Spinning out of the events of Futire State, The Joker is public enemy #1 and nobody knows where he is hiding. A mysterious woman wants to hire Jim Gordon to hunt down and kill the Clown Prince of Crime. There is also a back-up story featuring Punchline who is currently awaiting trial. I'll be trade waiting this story but I couldn't pass up the Mark Brooks variant so I went ahead and gave it a read.
Good start and an interesting point of view. I'm looking forward to see where this will go next!
For a book that’s titled “The Joker” there sure was an awful lot of Jim Gordon. I love Tynion’s writing and I’m not even complaining about the foundation he’s laying. I’m simply saying that I was expecting a first person perspective of the Joker and this book is not it — at least not yet.Guillem March is positively phenomenal and sets a lightning fast pace that will have you flipping through the pages so quickly you’re liable to get a paper cut. The intricacies of his mind bending art are on ful...
I just finished "Joker War," so I was excited to check this series out, but it ended up being more a Jim Gordon story rather than a Joker story. There is also a Punchline back-up story. Final rating = 2.5 stars
"Do you believe in evil?" The opening scene was both chilling and enthralling. Solid book overall! Love the premise of this mini series, & I wish Gordon would really be able to finish the job! I don't like a lot of DC's content these days, but I'm buying the hype on this series! 4 out of 5
The plot is very simple. The Joker is evil. Commissioner Gordon is obsessed with the Joker because he caused the death of his son James and put his daughter Barbara in a wheelchair. A very wealthy woman offers Gordon $25 million to kill the Joker. So, I take it that this series is going to be cat and mouse tale featuring Commissioner Gordon trying to kill or capture The Joker. Are we expected to believe that Gordon might finish off The Joker and if it’s an unwinnable fight then I wonder what the...
