A young boy finds a pogo stick at a yard sale. He buys it and goes hopping throughout the city...eventually ending up at his grandmother's house where they both go hopping together to a picnic.A very basic beginning-to-read book with repetitive phrases and illustrations that exactly match the text to help early readers.
In this recent Geisel award honoree, a little boy hops to make a picnic for him and his grandma. It's largely a wordless picture book with the exception of a couple of simple sentences and words that might make a beginning reader feel very proud to have read an entire book.
Simple verse tells the tale of what happens when a young boy buys a pogo stick from a yard sale, and then goes food shopping while hopping on it.

Very simple easy reader. Boy goes shopping on a pogo stick and then goes on a picnic with Grandma. Rounded up because i liked the pogo hopping Grandma.
I boy jumps on his pogo stick, gathers ingredients for lunch, and stops at grandma’s house. Grandma jumps on her pogo stick and together they head to the park for a picnic.
A little boy finds a pogo stick at a yard sale and hops down the road, to the deli for cheese, the grocers for apples, and the bakery for bread - he has important plans for lunch with someone special. Guided level C reader with very few words - in fact, the story is completely carried by the darling illustrations. It's a good reader for beginning readers. The low word count and illustrations are great! It's a fun and relatable story of a boy getting food for a picnic with his grandmother. I wish that there was a page after he buys the apples and bread showing him paying again, like there is after he buys the cheese. It would be a longer book, but the repetition of "I pay." would reinforce the words.
We've certainly come a long way from "see spot" books! This book has simple phrases but I love the accompanying illustrations and the fact that the simple phrases do tell a story. It's not just random stuff. I also love the little surprise (view spoiler)[ of his grandma hopping with him! (hide spoiler)].
I thought for a minute that we were going to lose track of what happened with the cheese and bread, but things righted themselves by the end.Read for Librarian Book Group.

There aren't a lot of books written about pogo sticks! But this is definitely a cute one. Our young protagonist finds a pogo stick. Dad puts a helmet on his head and off he goes to visit his grandmother! As a grandmother myself, I must say that I loved the ending. The book is perfect for the beginning reader with simple words and lots of pictures to help readers decipher a word if they are unsure of it. I'm happy this won a Geisel Honor Award.
