These captivating short stories in Granta 155 have many themes. The clear trend seems to be each is perhaps better written than the preceding. A very mixed bag: nice to very good stories from Mateo Garcia Elzondo, Miluska Benavides, Aura Garcia-Junco, Andrea Abreu, Machado Vento, Martin Felipe Castagnet, Estanislao Medina Huesca, Munir Hachemi, Diego Zuniga, Carlos Manuel Alvarez and, of course, Christina Moooooooooooorales! But there were quite a few stories I could not find my way in.

Every issue of Granta magazine is a mixed bag. Because it is always a collection of pieces from a variety of different sources, this always means there are some that I respond to well and some that I don't. As a photographer myself, I always look forward to the photo essays, but there aren't any of those in this issue which focuses entirely on young writers who write in Spanish (all translated into English by a multitude of translators, some very well known (well, they must be because even I hav...

Granta is always worthwhile and even the editions which I find less rewarding always contain at least a few interesting and arresting pieces. I didn't enjoy this edition as much as others, but really enjoyed the pieces by Paulina Flores, Gonzalo Baz, Andrea Chapela, Dainerys Machado Vento & Aneila Rodriguez.Bring on the next edition.

Overall, the stories presented in this issue are a mixed bag, with some quite mediocre, and others that do have value but I didn't necessarily connect with. There are two excellent stand-out stories for me. I'm delighted to have discovered the prose of Estanislao Medina Huesca, who builds tension with finesse. I was disappointed in this collection. Many of the selections are kind of grim, joyless, and sometimes just mystifying. I liked the piece by Martin Felipe Castagnet, and look forward to his next book.

Fue muy interesante leer a las nuevas voces contemporáneas. Como dice en el mismo prólogo ,algunos de los cuentos están cargados con mucha comicidad como el niño dengue o la oda a Cristina Morales escrita por la tocaya de Cristina Morales o el personaje picaresco no binarie de Paulina flores. Algunos cuentos tienen ese misticismo latinoamericano y otros relatan cuestiones de fondo con la identidad y el lugar de donde vienen los autores. I was fascinated by this collection. Stories of outsiders, ( “Juancho, Baile”, “Dengue Boy”, Buda Flaite”, “Our Windowless Home”, “Ruins in Reverse”, “A Story of the Sea”); Tales of disasters and dystopias, (“Kingdoms”, “Capsule” “Borromean Rings”, “Sea Of Stone”, and , even, “Levert’s Appearance”); I loved the final piece, Cristina Morales’ paean to woman kickboxers (one of whom carries the same name). The only piece I found dated was Estanislao Medina Huesca’s “Wanjala”, where the characters.

This collection was a breath of fresh air. I a have soft spot on Spanish language fiction, so I may be a little biased. But I was impressed by the talent of these young authors and the variety of stories in this issue. The editors have done a great job.
