This was really fun!! I really enjoyed all of the different stories collected in this.
My Lana Condor fancast as Cassandra Cain4.5The opening letter by Jeff Yang pretty much describes my relationship with comic book superheroes—if I looked closely enough, Bruce Wayne was Bruce Nguyen, Dick Grayson was Dick Wei Shen, and Selina Kyle was Selina Kai-Le. I had to imagine myself and my cultures in characters that could pass as us, but I knew in my heart they would never say or act explicitly like someone like me. So when DC announced that they would be releasing an Own Voices Asian iss...
This is easily one of the best over-sized anthology books DC's done lately (and boy have they done a lot). There's 1 or 2 throw-away stories that are barely 5 pages long, with little to no real story, but for the most part they're all very heartfelt and eye-opening, fun, little stories.“Sounds” (Orphan) story: 4 ⭐“Dress Code” (YA Green Lantern story):1 ⭐ (it's literally 3 pages. Not much to 'get' here)“Hawke & Kong” (Connor Hawke and The New Super-Man) story: 5 ⭐ “Special Delivery” (Damian Wayne...
This was a ton of fun. While most stories last only a few pages we got to see so many Asian superheroes kicking butt. There's a lot of strong stories, mostly anything with Cass was wonderful, the story with Conner was super cute, and I really enjoyed all the little side stories throughout. The monkey king one was fun but a little let down overall on that one. But yeah if you love Asian superheroes this is a great celebration issue to grab.
4.5/5, but rounded up for GR.This is definitely one of my favorite oversized collection that I've read from DC in recent years. It features a lot of characters and authors I really like. Even if you're not super familiar with any of the characters, it's written in a way that's pretty enjoyable regardless. (Also since when has Lian Harper been un-deadened?? That was a very pleasant surprise)
DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration is a collection of eleven comic vignettes that celebrates Asian Heritage Month. This anthology collects eleven vignettes written and illustrated by a myriad of Asian writers and pencillers with seven pin-ups.This anthology is divided into eleven vignettes with each story centering on a specific Asian superhero. It starts off with a wonderful introduction from Jeff Yang and then devlves into the stories. Characters focused on are: Cassandra C...
I hope this leads to more stories focused on Asian characters by Asian creators. I like the idea behind this but the cynical part of me thinks it's just DC's way of acting like they're being inclusive without actually bothering to do anything beyond that. But the other part of me thinks that it's good DC are openly acknowledging that Asian racism has gone from latent to blatant since COVID. Plus it's good these very talented authors and artists are getting a spotlight shined on their work, and I'...
As expected, anthology books have a variety of stories with quite different levels of quality and many of those in here are really not good. I wasn´t surprised by it, but I didn´t expect the lengths that some authors would go to.The intro to the comic by Jeff Yang was already full of "woe is me" and I really wonder how far he would go to project something into this story. This is someone who considers Superman´s story of being and "undocumented refugee adopted by a white Kansas couple" to be an
Thoroughly enjoyed this!! A lot of the time these kind of anthologies can be a bit middling where you get one or two great stories and then a few filler ones you don't really care about, but not the case here. Even with characters I was unfamiliar with I was still engaged, which I think had a lot to do with the more human element of each story. And of course it's great to see more Asian representation in comics! And not just in terms of DC characters, but the majority of the writers and artists b...
Good on DC for rising up to stereotypes and violence. These stories are fun and enlightening, and collected with commentary that ties everything together with a focus on heritage. I realize that sounds obvious, but that's not something we get to see a lot in comics or on tv, and it's refreshing to get an insider look without being pulled aside by explanations.
Sounds ~ 5/5☆“I do not need words to do what I do. But sometimes…I want them.”Special Delivery ~ 4/5☆“So does my heritage make me who I am? Does my past define me? No. I define who I am.”Masks ~ 5/5☆“…sometimes the masks we wear are meant to show the world who we really are.”
There were a couple of good stories but they all had the same sad theme. I did want to know more about Hawke & Kong.
A great collection of stories and characters highlighting many facets of Asian culture and heritage beautifully. Very well done!
I'm not usually one for comics anthologies, but this collection was beautifully put together. The stories ranged from adorable (the vignette with Cass!!!) to heart-warming to badass (the festival, the Monkey Prince), and all of them extremely well written. It's always so good to see your old favorites, and I was so happy to see Lian back in the DC universe-- I'm going to have to catch up on Catwoman so I can see more of her! I was also intrigued by the Monkey Prince, who is new to the DC Univers...
So I teared up multiple times. Glad DC spoke out about the rise in violence against Asian/Asian American people
This is a collection of vignettes (4-10 pages each) about some of the Asian heroes of the DC Universe, of whom I have to say there are more than I thought. The art is variable, as one might expect given the wide range of contributors, but part of the point of an anthology is to showcase different styles in this way. The stories are mostly pretty good, although they're too short to do anything very much, with many of them consisting of little more than a fight scene. For me, the ones that stood o...
I just loved the concept of this! It was so great to see all of the Asian superheroes featured, not to mention the variety of art and writing styles from so many great authors and illustrators! Snacks are definitely recommended, because the one problem I had was that this made me so hungry, with all of the fabulous foods featured, including an entire festival's worth. There's a helpful summary at the end that reviews the basic stats on the superheroes and when they appeared in the universe.
This was fun. I’m not asian so I can’t really comment on that subject but the stories were nice. Except for “What’s in the box?”. I felt it was wasn’t really a story at all. The Monkey Prince story exceeded my expectations.
Pretty standard stories as collections go. If you're new to DC or stepped away for a while it's probably a good way to introduce yourself to some characters you might not already know. Not a bad read by any definition.
