Fran Wilde - Unseelie Brothers Ltd.: 3/5. Interesting resolution but otherwise felt hard to get into. Confusing characters (and names).

"Unseelie Brothers, Ltd" Fran Wilde, for Hugo Awards 2022
Fiction Unseelie Brothers, Ltd. by Fran Wilde - 4/5This was really interesting to read and you get absorbed in the magical and a bit sinister world of high society dressmaking.Thirteen of the Secrets in My Purse by Rachel Swirsky - 3.5/5This was intriguing but I felt it could also fit in the poetry categoryProof by Induction by José Pablo Iriarte - 4/5A more emotional look at a very rational scientific topic. Can we store our personalities, the idea of our 'self' in the form of GBs? And does
Great issue, loved the selection of stories. In particular, "Unseelie Brothers, Ltd" was most captivated me. "Heart Shine" was middling plot-wise, but it so tenderly and earnestly depicted a belief in magic that I couldn't help but be drawn to it. "Proof by Induction" was the only story in this issue that was more on the sci-fi spectrum of things rather than fantasy, but it had a fun concept. I appreciated that the story did not delve into the intricacies and implications of the Coda, but instea...

Fairly strong issue. 3.5.Highlights: - Unseelie Brothers, Ltd.- River, Clap Your Hands- The Protagonist Problem
Again an issue from last year. It was a decent one but it neither had high highs or low lows. Here again few words about all the short stories and some of the other things.FICTIONUnseelie Brothers, LTD. by Fran Wilde: Pretty magical and slightly scary. Pretty enjoyable read. 4/5Proof of Induction by José Pablo Iriarte: On the surface about maths but more a story about sorrow, looking for acceptance and disappointment. 3,5/5Thirteen of the Secrets in My Purse by Rachel Swirsky: Short and funny. S...

My favorite stories this issue were "Unseelie Brothers, Ltd." by Fran Wilde and "Proof of Induction" by José Pablo Iriarte.I also really appreciated the essay "The Protagonist Problem" by Ada Palmer and Jo Walton.
This rating and review is only for the short story River, Clap Your Hands by Sheree Renee Thomas that is contained in this volume.Sometimes it’s dangerous to love that much. Finally!! A mermaid story that I really really enjoyed. It is subtle in its delivery but heavy handed with symbolism and nuance. The prose is just simply gorgeous. It is the second short story I've read by this author, and MAN(!!!) can this lady write! I see a lot of beautiful symmetry between cultural identity and fantastical...
My favorite short story was "Thirteen of the Secrets in my Purse" by Rachel Swirsky"Proof by Induction" by José Pablo Iriarte, is quite good and also reads like a Black Mirror episode"Unseelie Brothers, Ltd." by Fran Wilde was absolutely magical and another favorite "How the Girls Came Home" by Eugenia Triantafyllou is a lovely and story about a very special girl with magical feet!"The Hungry Ones" by Emma Törzs is surreal and deals with an insecure narcissistic man that seeks out vengeance only...
Unseelie Brothers, Ltd.: This one was solid, but didn't make a huge impression on me. 3/5Thirteen of the Secrets in My Purse: This is a short but sweet tale which made me smile. I liked it. 4/5Proof by Induction: This was a heartwrenching and beautiful story which I adored. Subject matter I could really relate to and a really imaginative take on the topic. 5/5How the Girls Came Home: A beautiful allegory of how the patriarchy and parental expectations make daughters disappear which I love love l...
Rating is for the story “Unseelie Brothers Ltd.” by Fran Wilde.
So far only listened to:-- How the Girls Came Home by Eugenia Triantafyllou narrated by Joy Piedmont - 2*Not the type of storytelling I like. It's a "deep story" hidden within a fairy tale. A girl has new feet every day. Different animal's feet that allow her to have that animal's traits. Her father and a shoemaker are trying to force her to have human feet. Her father seeing her changing feet as a curse. Our MC (view spoiler)[ learns to embrace her feet and herself and discovers where all the s...
