The GR-243 - El Sendero de La Sierra de las Nieves to give it its full title - is amongst the latest of a number of GR walking routes that have been created in Spain including four that pass through Ronda. GR stands for Gran Recorrido and comes from Grande Randonée, the term first used in France to designate a long distance hiking trail. The GR-243 is an averagely challenging linear route divided into 6 stages, the last of them with two choices of route, which totals either 94.6km or 96.8km. The walk links the villages that lie along the northern and eastern flanks of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, dipping in and out of the area designated as ‘Park’. The two sixth stages from Monda to Istán that run through the mountains just to the south of the park’s border are waymarked as the GR-243.1. A seventh final stage can de added by walking the stage 6B variant in reverse then taking a waymarked ‘deviación’ - still part of the official 243.1 - from El Refugio de Juanar to Ojén. Adding this beautiful seventh leg to the initial six brings the total distance covered to a little under 110km. Of these seven stages, stages 4 and 5 can be combined and easily covered in one day. This means the whole of the route can be covered in 6 days of averagely challenging walking. So it’s perfectly feasible to hike the complete GR-243 if you’re flying in to Spain for just a seven day break. In this case the best choice of airport would be Málaga from where there are regular buses as well as a couple of daily trains to the walk’s start point in Ronda. The journey by bus takes about 1hr 30min or by train about 2hrs. The route was created and waymarked in 2009 by La Asociación Senderista Pasos Largos. It numbers amongst several long distance footpaths in Andalucía including the pan-European GR-7 which crosses southern Spain on its course for Greece. Its creation reflects a growing interest in rural tourism and long distance trails, exemplified by the huge popularity of the Camino de Santiago. The Camino has attracted tens of thousands of hikers from all over the world and brought welcome income to many remote towns and villages in Spain. After many years as a destination for seekers of sun, sea and sand, Andalucía has become a popular destination for walking holidays thanks to the creation of these new hiking trails and the waymarking of those which already were in existence. Highlights of the GR-243 • Ronda, one of Europe’s most spectacularly situated mountain towns • remote mountain trails with few other walkers • clear waymarking • a GR route than can comfortably be completed in a week of hiking • pretty villages with inexpensive food and accommodation • a large part of the route is within a designated UNESCO Biosphere • varied plant and animal life • valley, forest and high mountain footpaths • easy access to the trail’s start and end points
