Commissioned in 1880, the Akaroa lighthouse stood sentinel at the Heads for almost one hundred years. When it was replaced with a new, unmanned tower and automatic light in 1977, it’s service to sailors seemed over.
However, an enthusiastic group of locals had a plan. They wanted to relocate the old lighthouse to a new position in the Akaroa town centre and to ensure its light continued to shine.
This book tells the story, how a small group of dedicated men and women took on this monumental task.
Today the lighthouse sits proudly on a prominent site and has become an integral part of Akaroa’s landscape. The town is indebted to these people for their determination and foresight.
