A short visual poem about hair. "Finding ways to erase them out from our skin, to iron them out of our hair." One sentence that is so deep in meaning.
This is so beautiful- both the words and illustrations. I’m always happy to add another Acevedo to my collection.
I will listen to anything Elizabeth Acevedo reads. This is beautiful and empowering and lovely and meaningful and pure art. Love love love.
I absolutely love this book from the amazing artwork to the beautiful words. Love both of there work individually and glad to see them collaborate on a project that speaks a lot to me and many others as well :).
Absolutely beautiful and flawless. The words go with the illustrations so perfectly. I hope this inspires and uplifts and empowers.
I LOVE everything she writes!!! Where were books and poems like this when I was younger?
One of my favorite authors. The book is written flawlessly the illustrations go with her poems perfectly a very uplifting and inspiring visual novel. It sheds light unto the Dominican culture that so many try to deny and she does it in a way that challenges so many of those wrong beliefs.
a beautiful celebration of her mixed heritage through hair & life!
A beautifully illustrated and powerful poem! Full review to come.
Beautiful poem! Beyond gorgeous illustrations!
I received an ARC of this Poem as a volunteer reader at Under the Umbrella: a queer little bookstore in Salt Lake City, UT.Elizabeth Acevedo has a voice and musicality to her work that sings off the pages. If you've ever heard her read her poetry out loud, you'll understand the enchanting rhythm of her poems and you'll hear her voice in your head every time you pick up one of her works. Acevedo's lyrical poetry combined with Andrea Pippins' art makes this little book a masterpiece to read.I love...
You really cannot go wrong with Elizabeth Acevedo. I preordered this and it is smaller and thinner than I expected but packs a punch. Acevedo's pointed, beautiful verse pairs well with the bold illustrations featuring women of color and their hair.
ARC provided by Young Adult Books CentralIn this small format book (5.5" x 7.5"), National Poetry Slam champion Acevedo's spoken word poem, "Inheritance" is beautifully illustrated and turned into a piece of artwork that is meaningful, emotional, and now, portable. In hand drawn text of varying sizes, the lines of the poem become part of the pictures that support the ideas in the text. Curly letters that mimic the curls in the illustrations declare "Some people tell us to "fix" my hair", and the...
It’s beautiful. I just wish it was longer.
Every book that Elizabeth Acevedo writes, I’m going to buy it! I already read all of her books and I’m sooo looking forward for this one! ❤️❤️
Inheritance hit me deep. It's so relatable. As I kept passing the pages, all I could do was nod at everything Elizabeth Acevedo wrote. I'm thankful that nowadays in Puerto Rico, people are more accepting and loving of the curly hair. But as I was growing up, all I kept told to do was to straighten my hair. The only person in my life who always rooted for me to leave it curly was my grandpa. "You're burning your hair!", he'd exclaim every single time he'd see me with my hair straightened. It even w...
Beautifully done commentary on POC hair: history, cultural origins and the evolution to today. The art is also beautiful.
"We’re told Dominicans do the best hair We can wash, set, flatten the spring in any lock BUT WHAT THEY MEAN IS:we are the best at swallowing amnesiain a cup of morir soñando:DIE DREAMINGBecause it seems easierto do that than live in thisreality” This little graphic novel / illustrated poem is a knockout. Visually stunning. So good that as soon as I read it I went back and listened to the audiobook performance (OBVIOUSLY) narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo!! HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY Inheritance!!!
Powerful, colorful,& full of love & pride. The only reason I rated 4 stars is because I wish it was longer 🖤
I have not been this excited about a book in a long time. One of my favorite authors and an artist that I have been following for years, doing a collaboration?! I was hooked before I even read it. It is beautifully written and so vibrant. I keep rereading it because it is so easy to read, and I keep finding more and more details. I just love this book so much, and the topic is one that needs to be talked about. All hair is beautiful! Please go buy this book, you won’t regret it.
