The scene is a large motor home behind a house on the outskirts of Ashland, Oregon. It is the fall of 1991 and four men are meeting together for the first time to talk about their poetry. All of the men are in or approaching middle age. They all have families. One is an educator, one a businessman, and two work for a newspaper. They come from diverse backgrounds, but all have been shaped by the culture of post-World War II America. They are American men with many of the same needs, the same fears. They have fought the same battles. They possess the same frailties. They are sons, and the fathers of sons and daughters. They debate what it means to be a man. The result is a river of words, a path that winds and cuts its way through time and the lives of the writers.
