0/5 ( ratings)
In this historical fiction, Angelina Marino Ciolino, a Sicilian-American, relates the hardships she experienced as a young girl immigrating to the United States at the dawn of the twentieth century. Her story, told from the eyes of her younger self, offers a unique perspective on the great Sicilian immigration. In spite of her parents’ long hours in the fields of Biscaquino, their village, her family suffers from poverty and hunger. Under the thumb of an oppressive landowner and at the mercy of the Sicilian mafia, her parents have no hope of peace or providing for their family. Her father, seeing a sliver of hope when a padrone offers indentured servitude in exchange for passage to the United States, jumps at the opportunity to better his family’s life. His wife opposes the move that will rip her from her elderly parents but complies with her husband’s wishes.

Too late, they learn that under the bright picture presented by the padrone is a sinister truth.

Angelina longs to return to the comfort of her village where she was loved and protected from the harsh realities of life. Angelina must dip into her well of courage to help her family escape the company that bought their lives.
