A Place in the Sun: Ecology and the Living World

A Place in the Sun: Ecology and the Living World

Louis Darling
4/5 ( ratings)
Ecology is really a new way of thinking about life and a new approach to trying to understand it. Ecology represents a point of view very different from the ages-old traditional fallacy that mankind is the center of all things in the universe and that it is our destiny to contest and to battle with nature as an enemy and to conquer it — a belief that man is somehow apart from and at odds with the rest of life.

There is also joy and peace of mind that comes with this new way of thinking. It brings visions of the great beauty of the intricate workings and interrelationships of life to add to the one we already have of its physical loveliness. There comes a new understanding of the aliveness of the landscape around us and a sense of belonging in it. … The idea of doing this book came while we were working on a large wall chart on ecology commissioned by the National Audubon Society.

— from the Forward, pp. 8-9.
