From Barra to Berneray: Archaeological Survey and Excavation in the Southern Isles of the Outer Hebrides

From Barra to Berneray: Archaeological Survey and Excavation in the Southern Isles of the Outer Hebrides

Colin Merrony
0/5 ( ratings)
From Barra to Berneray presents the amazing results of thirteen years of archaeological research on twelve islands at the very end of the Hebridean chain, all but two of them now uninhabited. Keith Branigan and Patrick Foster, with colleagues and students from the Department of Archaeology and Prehistory at the University of Sheffield, have recorded almost 2000 sites and monuments on these islands. Their prehistory has been illuminated for the first time by carefully selected excavations on sites of all periods and types.

Highlights include the aisled roundhouse at Alt Chrisal, the kerbed cairns of Vatersay, and the earth-house and massive broch on Pabbay. This volume details all the sites discovered, reports on the discoveries at all the excavated prehistoric sites, and in three special chapters provides an overview of the earlier and later prehistory of these beautiful but windswept islands. Archaeologists will find this an invaluable source on a hitherto ignored part of the British Isles, while all those who know and love the islands will be fascinated by the story of their first five thousand years of human occupation.
