I loved this collection of Buddhist fiction. I don't know much about Buddhism, so when I picked up this book at the library, I did so on a whim and, boy, was I pleasantly surprised! Most of the stories are wonderful, and while I'm sure that having knowledge of Buddhism will add much to your reading experience, I don't think that I missed out on much.My favorite stories are:Nixon Under the Bodhi TreeZoo Animal Keeper I, REC-SVC-ZKThe Golden MixGreyhound BodhisattvaTanukiBeheadingsIn the Sky There...
For a book I was forced to buy and read I enjoyed it a lot. My two favorite stories were Martyr and The Guest at the Feast of Bon.
I fully enjoyed Wheeler's collection of fictional stories that incorporates Buddhist philosophy in a manner that I found not only relative to life, but completely entertaining as well. The stories were vivid and presented in ways that could be better remembered such as Buddhist parables, koans, and sutras. What I appreciated the most from Wheeler's Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree is how appropriate it is to have a book about Buddhist fiction. Awesome piece by Dinty Moore! I use it in my classes!
The eye-catching title compelled me to pick up the book, and fortunately, it had a variety of stories of good to excellent quality making it worth the read-. The selection ranges from light-hearted, esoteric, powerful, thought provoking, and bittersweet. My personal favorites: Nixon Under the Bodhi Tree, Martyr, The Golden Mix, Beheadings, Greyhound Bodhisatva.
I loved nearly every story in this collection. Some are super-short - a page or two, and others much longer. All very thought-provoking.
I read the entirety of this book while waiting for a doctor's appointment and I wasn't even mad when they called my name an hour later than my appointment was set for. 5/5 for making me not angry lol
Hits and misses.
Such a mix of voices and styles and stories. I didn't know what to expect (knowing almost nothing about Buddhism), but the variety and range was surprising and intriguing and very human.
Most of this collection is not relevant to Persephone's questions
There is quite a mix of short and long stories here, of uneven quality. The common thread is that they touch on Buddhism somehow: about Buddhists or referencing Buddhist themes. Some are sentimental, some inscrutable, and some delightful. The subject does not make for the interest, the writing must carry it. The same would be true if they were Christian stories.
Nice selection of short stories, several more successful than others.
Zen fiction? Well, okay. These stories are of varying quality. I can't remember most of them several weeks after reading the book. But it's an interesting concept.
