The Mythic Circle: #43: 2021 (Series in Creative Writing from The Mythopoeic Society)

0/5 ( ratings)
The Mythic Circle is the creative writing journal of The Mythopoeic Society and publishes fiction, poetry, and images created in the tradition of fantasy literature established by J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and the Inklings. As of 2020, the editors are Victoria Gaydosik and Nolan Meditz . The Society has published creative writing since 1971; The Mythic Circle has been published since 1987. The journal is currently published on an annual basis and usually appears in time for the Mythopoeic Society Convention each August. Aspiring contributors for the next issue are invited to submit completed short fiction, poetry, or images at [email protected] welcome experienced and first-time writers. The current issue for 2021, #43, includes stories featuring monsters--some conquering and some conquered , mythic creatures , fairy changelings of adolescents , folk tales in the Spanish and Russian traditions , ghostly encounters , cross-species cooperation for survival , old-fashioned adventures among trolls and halflings , a retelling in ballad form of the Arthurian tale of Peredur , and an ecosophic metaphysical speculation . The issue also includes another poem by Joe R. Christopher, and poetry from Krista Canterbury Adams, Sarah Berti, David Sparenberg, Katherine Dubke, Jonathan Rolfe, and Joshua S. Fullman. The issue's stained glass panels were created and photographed by Phillip Fitzsimmons; additional images are by Leigh Ann Brook, Yiming Zhao, Samantha Henze, Marc Rhodes-Taylor, and Joseph Thompson. Issue #43 follows an overarching concept, moving from threatening or ambiguous scenarios and monstrous encounters through death itself and then into more optimistic and upbeat tales. Stories, poems, and images echo these themes; they are comprehensible individually, but they also work together to underscore the function of myth and magic in new original works that draw on the traditions of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and the other Inklings. Audio files of the stories and poems in Issue #43 will be available for free at after August 1, 2022.
