There is no real sense of what made Cezanne's paintings different. Perhaps it would have helped to show what was traditionally accepted as great art at that time.
I like this book and it talks about a artist named:Paul Cezanne and a boy also named:Paul Cezanne, card players.
Enjoyed this picture book biography! Now I want to learn more about the artist.
An interesting book about Cezanne and his son. I would be interested in reading more of the books in this series about artists.
Another great kids' biog. Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) Huge, shy mountain man with a phobia of being touched. Invented new method of simplifying shapes into cones, cylinders, and spheres, later known as cubism. The father of all modern art. Super close to where Van Gogh was.
An enjoyable way to learn more about Paul Cezanne, told as a story that children can relate to. Laurence Anholt's illustrations are delightful, and I would be interested to find additional books in his series celebrating great artists. For grown-ups, the author's note on the inside back cover provides a brief bio of Cezanne.
My kindergartner brought this home from the school library and it was such a lovely surprise. He's not really been exposed to art, other than a few trips to the local art museum and his art classes in school. This book really held his interest and he asked lots of questions about painting and artists. What a delightful book!
We've read several of the books in Laurence Anholt's series on artists. He features many of the most popular artists of the nineteenth century and condenses their life stories and famous works of art into a short tale that will entertain and inform children. I love that he doesn't just offer a biographical sketch, but instead weaves a tale that will keep a child engaged. His illustrations have a unique style and seem to fit in perfectly with the age of the story. Also, I love how he incorporates...
Paul Cezanne visits his father, Paul Cezanne the artist in a mountain town. The artist Cezanne is the laughing stock of the town and is often called 'mountain man' because he spends so much time up the mountain painting. Then one day an art dealer comes to town and takes away all of Cezanne's paintings. He sells them all and tells everyone how Paul Cezanne has invented a new way to paint. When the young Paul grows up, he too becomes an art dealer.
Great age-appropriate bio of Paul Cezanne. Loved it.
Nice realistic depiction of a time in the career of Cezanne, including his long expeditions to paint alone in the countryside and his phobia about being touched. Shows his devotion to art and his son. Message: Follow your dreams, work hard and you will make something of your life. Inviting illustrations.
This picture book is about Paul Cezanne the painter and his relationship with his young son. It tells the story about Paul the painter and is great for teaching children about famous artists.
I've really liked this series of books, but this one didn't seem to integrate the artwork as well as some of the others, and I wish there had been more back story about what he was living in the mountains and why his son wasn't with him. I didn't know much about Cezanne before this, though, and I am curious to learn more about him now.
Stumbling upon a great book is such a pleasant surprise! When my daughter, Emmy, picked up this book from a library display, I didn't want to take it home. Emmy is barely 3 years old, and I didn't think she would be interested in a book about an artist. Emmy insisted, and I begrudgingly put this book in our bag.The librarians, however, knew what they were doing by placing this book on display. Emmy loved hearing the story about a little boy visiting his eccentric artist father on the side of a m...
While not a typical biographical read, this is a fun work of historical fiction that is perfect for young children learning about Cezanne and his struggles to create something entirely new with art. I can imagine students excitedly pointing out the backgrounds that are inspired from Cezanne's work.
This series is a wonderful introduction to art for children and parents alike.
Nice, sweet book about a boy's pride and belief in his father. Great way to introduce artists to children
I like this series that gives a brief window into the lives of famous artists. They are cute and fun and a great way to introduce artists to kids. Also important to me are the inclusion of actual pieces by the artist, not just the illustrator's rendition of the pieces (although those pop up from time to time as well, and an author's note where more information is available. I do wish there was a "suggested reading" section that gave some direction on where to find more info on Cezanne.
Art and history mix in Laurence Anholt's beautiful picture books for children (and adults). This one is about my favorite painter, Paul Cézanne, and his son, also named Paul, the "apple boy" of the title, who was beloved by his father and later acted as his agent. The story details how young Paul went to visit his father and how, together, they explored the nearby mountain (Mont St. Victoire) and the natural area, as the father looked for subjects to paint. Later, the art dealer Vollard takes ma...
Laurence Anholt's book about Paul Cezanne and his father is a good introduction to the artist Cezanne and his work. His son, also named Paul, went on to be a successful art dealer. Throughout the book the reader can see paintings by Cezanne's as well as colors and scenes of Provence that inspired the great painter.
