Humanist Ethics: Dialogue on Basics

Humanist Ethics: Dialogue on Basics

Kai Nielsen
0/5 ( ratings)
With the advance of science, a considerable part of the educated public has lost faith in religious scriptures. Millions have acclaimed the liberation from superstition that this has provided, but have found themselves divided as to just what this means overall for human conduct. Is an individual simply free to follow his own subjective desires when there is no fear of penalties in eternity? Or are there ethical principles discoverable in the human situation that make demands on us? Do we have definable obligations that appear unavoidably with the new rights and freedoms? And, in the light of science, are we actually free to choose? Critics of humanism often claim that it is unable to provide a secure foundation for moral responsibility.
This book addresses itself to these and related questions. It brings together in dialogue twenty of the world's leading humanist philosophers representing a wide range of viewpoints. Each has been invited to respond to five vital questions: The Meaning and Source of Morality; Free Will and Responsibility; Morality as Workability vs. Morality as Justice; The Basis of Rights and Duties; Principles in Situational Morality.
Among the well-known contributors are Kai Nielsen , Mihailo Marković , Alastair Hannay , V.M. Tarkunde , and Will Durant, Paul Kurtz, and Kurt Baier, among others .
Not simply presenting their own viewpoints, the contributors are challenged to respond to criticism by their colleagues. On the premise that a genuine meeting of minds is essential for advance toward consensus, the contributors have been invited to respond to articles by others and, in turn, to reply to comments on their own articles. Readers will find this book both provocative and insightful. It is bound to set the stage for future discussions of humanism and ethics.
