He demonstrates his feats of magic before the royal butler, and asks, what the occasion is for all the festivities that are to take place. Mono learns that the king has demanded that all the royal coffers be filled with gold coins bearing the profile of the king. When he discovers the hardships the people are put under in order to fulfill the kings greed for wealth, Mono decides to teach the king a lesson. The story is about how Mono performs feats of magic and the king wants to reward his troupe with gold, but Mono performs magic that changes the king's coins into silver, and then into worthless straw, feathers and into stones. Mono and his troupe leave, but the butler believes Mono has stolen the king's gold and left worthless items in its place. The kings men rush out and seize Mono and place him in a dungeon but Mono is able to escape using feats of magic, and hides in the king's palace undetected and the king is weakened from fear and is unable to eat, and in his weakened condition, falls down the stairs and dies, and Mono changes into the kings clothes, and they think Mono is the king, and bury the king, thinking they have found Mono who is buried in a field where they bury the criminals of the kingdom. Mono changes the straw, feathers, silver, and stones, back to gold, and gives it back to the people. They discover that it was the king they had buried, and make Mono their new king.
