The work of Wiel Arets is characterised by the great attention he pays to all aspects of architecture, from the detailing of the smallest components of the building to the pure choice of words within his lectures and texts. Based on his concept of an 'architecture of freedom', his realised projects, ideas, and texts continually endeavour to arrive at a dialogue: in this architect's concept philosophy, film, and literature are closely involved.
This richly illustrated publication presents an overview of Arets' built work, such as the medical centres at Weert and Hapert, the men's fashion shop in Maastricht - for which Arets was awarded in 1987 by the City of Maastricht - and designs for a villa and penthouse in Miami. Besides these, it also devotes attention to his design for the railway tunnel site made with Wim van den Bergh. In 1988 Arets was awarded the Charlotte Köhler Prize for Architecture.
Besides architect Wiel Arets is also active as a publicist - as editor of Wiederhall Editions, amongst other things - and as a lecturer to the Architectural Association in London.
This publication appears in connection with the award of the Rotterdam-Maaskant Award for Young Architects to Wiel Arets.
