These are stories from a 29 year in the United States Army. They began when the author, at age 19 joined the New York State National Guard. Fearful of being drafted for two years, he thought he could survive the six months active-duty training. During his first few days on active duty as a young private, he realized that this was where he belonged. Twenty-nine years later, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. A total of nine years in the Federal Republic of Germany and two separate year-long tours in Vietnam, served as the basis of these stories. The stories range from humorous, to sad, to frightening. It is a chronicle beginning in an earlier era through many changes in doctrine, tactics, and equipment. The beginning stories are from a time when the Army was less than twenty years away from the end of World War II. The stories progress through the Cold War and end with our involvement in Afghanistan, supporting efforts by the local population, Soviet Union’s occupation of the country.
