I am not a huge horse fanatic but the stories in this were wonderful, by some of my favorite authors.
Here's a write-up, from DAW Books in 1992, from an old library bookmark I found!"Let these steeds carry you off to adventure and enchantment as they race, swift as the wind, to magic lands. You'll meet a devilish horse who just might make your wishes come true... a ghostly creature whom even death couldn't keep from the winner's circle... and a herd of other wonderful horses who will take you on a whirlwind gallop into new worlds of fantasy."
As a horse lover, I picked up this book not quite knowing what to expect. I have to agree with one of the previous reviewers that I think the best story in this collection is one entitled "Classical Horses" by Judith Tarr. A close second is "Silverdown's Gold", by Janny Wurts, which left me wanting to know more of the main characters' stories. Another unexpected gem, albeit short and very odd, is "The Czechoslovakian Pigeon Farmer and the Pony Who Wasn't a Paint" by Mary Stanton. That said, this
I always love any kind of fantasy horse stories!
part of this anthology: Silverdown's Gold - 5 starsTrionn the scullion could never pause anywhere for more than a minute without attracting a heap of cats. It did not matter wether his clothes reeked of the midden on those days when he raked out the garbage, or if he was simply sitting, huddled against the wind, awaiting his turn at the privy. The cats always found him. It had been that way since he was a baby in the cradle and nobody could guess why.Trionn is quiet and speaks very less, so ever...
I bought this along with Dragon Fantastic, and figured, oh, I'll probably like a couple of the stories, I'm more excited about the dragon book. But no! I do love horses, and these are some of the best short fantasy stories I've ever read. I still go back and reread several of them, including The Most Magical Thing About Rachel, by Nancy Springer. Some thoroughly wonderful stories!
I love horses; I wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, like many anthologies, this collection is really a mixed bag. A handful of stories were excellent - I'd give them 5 stars on their own. But others just didn't hold my interest or attention, or lacked something in the writing. Your mileage may vary. With such a wide range of stories, there are some bound to have more appeal to different audiences.
The Czechoslovakian Pigeon Farmer and the Pony that Wasn’t a Paint by Mary Stanton still makes me smile and Judith Tarr's Classical Horses was great.Stolen Silver by Mercedes Lackey 3/12/2006Love at First Ride by Mickey Zucker Reichert 3/13/2006Dancer's Fire by Josepha Sherman 3/14/2006The Phantom Watch by Charles Ingrid 3/15/2006The Czechoslovakian Pigeon Farmer & the Pony that Wasn't a Paint by Mary Stanton 3/16/2006Riding the Nightmare by Jennifer Roberson 3/17/2006When Lightning Strikes by L...
I tracked this book down to read "Stolen Silver" by Mercedes Lackey. I didn't realize that this story predated the Alberich books. It's almost word for word the same as the opening episode from his first book. It's a great introduction to the character and a great story, but if you've read the books, there's nothing new for you here.
Overall I liked this a lot. Some really great writing and stories. Not all were home runs but some definitely were. A fun read for anyone who loves horses.

I've been looking for this anthology for the longest time! The very first story in this book is "Stolen Silver" by Mercedes Lackey and in this story we see Alberich being rescued by his Companion, Taver, and him realizing that he's been Chosen. I absolutely ADORE Lackey's style of writing; in just 14 pages she manages to introduce a character you're dying to know more about and his Companion who has traveled to a rather dangerous region in order to get him. If you're a fan of Lackey's Valdemar s...
I purchased this book almost entirely for Judith Tarr's "Classical Horses" story which I absolutely adore being a connection between two things I have great interest in, horses and mythology. But all the stories were pretty good.
This book contains the short story "Stolen Silver" by Mercedes Lackey, which provided the seed for her later novel, Exile's Honor.
Fantastical and supernatural horse stories. My favorite, about the ghost of a race horse, made me teary-eyed every time.
This is one of my favorite books in my horse books collection, it consists of short horse stories that are amazing!! LOVE!
A lovely collection of short stories that will capture the imagination of any horse fancier!
