On the Lord's Prayer (Treasures of the Fathers of the Church)

On the Lord's Prayer (Treasures of the Fathers of the Church)

Serapion of Thmuis
4.8/5 ( ratings)
A collection of eight homilies delivered by St. Cyril of Alexandria, "On the Lord's Prayer." These homilies are part of larger collection of homilies which St. Cyril seems to have preached extemporaneously, some on actual feast days.

The original manuscripts of these homilies, preserved in Syriac, were discovered in Egypt, translated into English by Robert Payne Smith, and subsequently published by Oxford University in 1859. This was the first of St. Cyril's works to be translated into English. This book offers a greatly simplified translation to make the work more accessible to more readers of all levels.

Seven of the ten volumes in Migne's collection of the Cyrillian corpus contains the exegetical work of the great Alexandrian patriarch, most of which were written before his involvement in the Nestorian Controversy, before 428.

In the following homilies, the reader will be inspired by the intense, theological depth and spiritual vision of one of the greatest patriarchs the world has known. In this symphony of discourse, we witness how the harmony of the Holy Scriptures, the commentary of the Church Fathers, and the liturgical tradition blend to form a "trialogue" of faith that characterizes the fullness of Orthodox teaching.
