Oh, now that was a good, old-fashioned horror story. It definitely does live up the challenge of chilling my blood. It was very atmospheric, and written to great affect. I could almost imagine how it must have been for poor Angelo each night when he was preyed upon by the creature, and I felt as though I could see the mound that the two gentlemen are discussing, and how creepy that must have been for them. I also felt sad at the injustice against poor Cristina, and how she wreaks her vengeance.

One of those tale inside a tale stories that were a thing in older lit. Set in Italy, a man tells his friend Holger, the local story about a mysterious grave and the odd image that can be seen near it in the right moonlight. Holger swears it looks like a body and he goes closer to see it for himself. Then he went on till he reached the mound and stood upon it. I could see the Thing still, but it was no longer lying down; it was on its knees now, winding its white arms round Holger's body and loo...
Two friends are smoking, chatting and looking out to the sea one night. Is that a figure laying on top of a grave mound or is it a trick of the light? What entails is the recounting of a strange occurrence that happened in the village not that long ago. It involves a death, a stolen treasure, a murder, and an uncanny appearance. This is a fun story that hits all the right notes. Originally published in Collier's Magazine in 1905.

Set in Italy, a murdered girl lurks upon her hastily dug grave in the form of a corpse, viewed by the protagonist and his friend from the heights of their ruined tower residence. The narrator proceeds to tell his friend the story behind the ghostly presence.A wild 'gypsy' girl, Cristina was murdered by two rogue builders after she discovered them burying the stolen wealth of a man whose son she was desperately in love with. Her body was thrown into the same pit in which they buried their 'treasu...
An outstanding story about Americans in Italy and their supernatural experience.
(1905)Previously read; not sure when - this is a heavily-anthologized piece!A classic of vampire fiction; it features a seductive femme fatale whose unrequited love persists beyond the grave. The supernatural elements are mixed in with a story of mundane theft and murder in a small village, with all the expected drama of the Italian setting (as the author puts into his character's mouth: "Deeds that would be simply brutal and disgusting anywhere else become dramatic and mysterious because this i...
A little vampire tale! ...kind of. How exciting, and what a pleasant surprise to find in The Complete Wandering Ghosts! The vampire was able to send its spirit out to lure someone in, but I guess that's not that different from its mind control abilities in more common lore, or perhaps a manifestation of it. What I really liked about the "Thing" (as it was called) is that it wasn't a lame vampire like the ones you find all over fiction nowadays. "Sorry, it's totally my fault."Yes, thank you Lo...

Absolutely enjoyed this turning out to be a vampire tale! Set in Italy, the story starts in an old tower with a long history. From here we see the effects of moonlight on a grave. Is there a corpse on the grave or is it just an imagination? Then we hear the story of Christina, Angelo and Alario, come to know the horrors of the death and read the details about the theft on the old miser. Well plotted, a great inset story and with Christina an extremely haunting character (the red lips are a great...
This story delivered everything I like in a vampire/Gothic story, the classic creepy atmosphere was enough to get me hooked. liked the way Angelo couldn't resist going to the vampire, although he tried his best, but still he succumbed each night, that's what I like to see in a vampire story.
Angelo and Cristina’s encounter with a lost inheritance in a Southern Italian village situated off the coast of Calabria. Draws on themes of life and death through the depiction of religious rituals (Judas Iscariot) and also through the contrast between the flesh and blood of a living person and a vampire’s apparition. Historic and atmospheric with allusions ranging from local Barbary piracy (during the time of Emperor Charles V and Francis 1) off the nearby rugged coastline to depictions of far...
Not as uncanny as other classics.
I didn't enjoy this as much as "The Screaming Skull," but it's quite good. Set on a creepy coast of Italy near a ruined tower and an isolated village, and it portrays its vampire in a unique way as sort of part ghost; part blood-sucker. I feel like there should be more to it by the end, but what's there is cool and spooky.
4.7 stars!“A cool breeze stirred my hair at that moment, as the night wind began to come down from the hills, but it felt like a breath from another world.”― Francis Marion CrawfordThe Gothic style of F. Marion Crawford felt like a breath from another world. Spicy, garlic flower of a short story. We had dined at sunset; the sunset glow had reddened and faded again, and the evening purple steeped the vast chain of the mountains that embrace the deep gulf to eastward and rear themselves higher and...
Atmospheric, but a bit racist in a Victorian national stereotypes way.
-Gregory Kerkman
Still one of my favorite shorts of all time. Excellent.
A short vampire story with a very sad premise and a creepy, gripping intro. It also had one or two funny moments. I found parts of it boring, but it was still pretty good overall.
