الكتاب يتناول رعب الغرب من أي شيء تلتصق به صفة اسلام , أو ما يعرف باسلاموفوبيا . يتناول هذه الظاهرة بالتحليل الدقيق . أعجبني الكتاب بشموله و منطقيته و حياديته و أفكاره المرتبة و المنظمة , و ان كنت أرى ان الترجمة أفقدته جزءاً مهماً من رونقه .

Brilliant treatise on civilization and barbarism – Todorov demonstrates the falsity of the ever-more-popular delusions of white/Western civilizational/moral superiority while avoiding cultural relativism. Although the examples of American elite reasoning are from the George W. Bush Presidency, which might leave some readers believing this book is dated, the framework described is time-invariant. If there is a book I could make everyone in the world read by force, this would be it.

I have developed an uncharacteristically problematic relationship with this book. I find it rife with unsubstantiated and undeveloped arguments, disorganized in its propensity to alternate original and thought-provoking statements with drawn-out discussions of the self-evident, and at times just silly.
