This is an excellent collection, but it's not Eggleston's strongest. As one of the authors stated, this is more like a family album, which is fine if that is what you are into, but I prefer Eggleston's distance from his subjects to be one of the more interesting parts of his works.
It's odd that I begin my foray into the Eggleston oeuvre with this collection of images. Been told these are supposedly B-sides. Felt like A-sides to me. Never seen color pop like that. Even in "today" images. What with Photoshop and Lightroom and all that. Still nothing comes close to the richness of these images. Lov'd this so much I ordered Guide. I don't get it all, 100%. But I also read/perused the item/book/images in <1 hr. I just wanted to soak up the images in an abstract sense, before I...
Well curated. The B-sides are as great as the A-sides in many cases, and the family photos are quite interesting. Writing is well done. If you've spent time with the rest of his books and seen Stranded in Canton, this book is an essential addition to understanding Eggleston.
One of the most striking images in Michael Almereyda’s documentary film, *William Eggleston in the Real World*, also appears on the cover of the new Eggleston collection, *For Now*: Eggleston’s wife, Rosa, lies sleeping with a yellow-flowered duvet bunched across her middle, one slender, aristocratic hand holding the sheets in place near the pubic region. Has the couple just had sex? Rosa’s lovely long legs end in feet that appear slightly dirty; the room is small, dingy, and low-ceilinged. The
A beauty of a book on so many (dreamy) levels. The color of his images are the first things that hit you when you open his book, but the the composition of the pictures are the one's that really gives it a narrative of sorts. And one is never sure how important it is to know Eggleston's life or that he came from the South. I think he treats all objects (people as well as even a coke bottle) is equally important in front of his camera. Some of the images are funny, some also has a tinge of some s...
I purchased this because it was so beautiful. I want to own all of his books. The images make me nostalgic for a time I didn't live in. They are hard to look away from. I chose this because there were good essays in the back that complemented some of his other works, including the documentaries about him.
I have always loved Eggleston's portraits but they seem to only pop up every now and then. This book was my fix in that there are a lot of plates with Eggleston's family and close friends.
4 1/2 stars. A selection of previously unseen photos from the archives. The early images are as good as anything Eggleston ever released, though the later ones tend to overly emphasis portraits of key friends and family. Beautifully produced tome. I'd probably give it five stars if I could afford a copy.
