For his diploma thesis, which is presented here as a facsimile print, Frutiger wrote with water-soluble printing ink on well-glued paper. At the carpenter's he had beech wood panels planed to the height of the lettering, polished and moistened them and fixed the sheet with the lettering against the wood. He then pulled the whole thing through the copper press, which made the lettering visible on the wooden plate in mirror image.
