Goodwin establishes Lincoln's political genius by evaluating his interactions with the three individuals he appointed to his cabinet: William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, and Edward Bates. All of these men, who were accomplished, nationally known, and presidential candidates, first detested Lincoln for his rural upbringing and lack of experience, and were surprised and ashamed when they were vanquished by this relatively obscure Illinois lawyer.Team of Rivals not only chronicles the life of Abraham Lincoln, but also of his adversaries. This book contains various biographies of the entire team of personal and political rivals he formed to shepherd the country through its most trying moment. Doris Kearns Goodwin devotes five chapters to five significant persons, four of whom sought for the Republican presidential nomination in 1860 and all of whom served in Abraham Lincoln's cabinet following the election.
