The most pretentious book I've read since I finished The Panic Hand by Jonathan Carroll and swore never to touch anything he'd produce. And now it seems Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt has joined the JC Club.Peopled with irritating characters, the novel offers nothing more than a plotline revolving around the topics of how 'beauty is only skin deep' and 'all is vanity'. What a discovery...
Not my thing. Personally I didn't get it.
It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I couldn't let it go. It's one of those books that really get you thinking. You're in the story, not only while reading it, but also during other moments of the day. It definitely has a philosophical twist on life, art, and relationships in general, which is usual for Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt.
You're reading it, and then you notice it accidentally tells you how unimportant the way you look is, but on a deeper level than people used to make a topic out of it. At least these are my feelingsAnd since the book has a creative plot, it's something you should try, because you're not losing anything anyway. Something to enjoy anyway.
The story of human beings. Is devil actually.. evil? Or is he the symbol of freedom..?Read. Think. Read again. Think again.
Such an inspiring book. Even thought my obsession for looks hasn't gone away this book reminds me to give it a second thought and stop judging.
I hate this book more than anything.
I liked the main idea, but the execution - not so much. To be completely honest, I wanted to see something more in this book, and I really wanted to find a deeper message, but unfortunately I couldn't. Maybe I'm so disappointed, because I had such high expectations about it. But the sugar-coated ending and the excessively absurd situations were way too obvious for me to consider them good satire.
well at first i was so excited then... i dont know why but i dont like Schmitt but the most strange thing was occurred at first i dont like novel i cant stand character but at the end i fell some thing in my heart i deeply breath and smile like Bordem. at the end i started to fall in love with book!!!!!well i cant offer that story to anybody that's all i can say.
Read very slowly in French I always say I need to read more Schmitt books because I find his story ideas very unique and engaging. This book in particular was quite brilliant .An interesting story about a young boy who decides to kill himself mainly because his older twin brothers are so handsome and famous (models); he has a complex because nobody can believe that they are related. It sounds silly and I didn't have much sympathy with him at that point but the story gets better. Just as he’s a
**Warning: this text may contain spoilers** Perfect😍😍
The story of a suicidal man who is absolutely average in everything and decides to make himself an object, a work of art.The plot of the novel was kinda cool, it gave me major Frankenstein vibes-But it just... didn't work out for me.
while I loved 'Petits Crimes Conjugaux' and adored Schmitt, this roman really disappointed me. Everything was so common and so fake that I could hardly believe this could have come from the same creative and smart mind that 'Petits Crimes Conjugaux' did! Or maybe this was because I pesonaly dislike the idea of "let's respect the nature".
it was good but for me it wasn't as interesting as the other books of him.
After thoroughly disliking The Most Beautiful Book in the World: Eight Novellas, I still chose to subject myself to this little novel. And it's slightly better than the collection of short stories, mostly because it would have been a challenge for it to be worse. The narrator is sort-of-saved from suicide by a known avantgarde artist, who fakes his new protegee's death and then, by means of disfiguring operations, transforms him into a living statue. And things only go downhill from there. I kno...
What I learned from this book? To me it said: 'look around, understand, cherish what you already have because you never know how happy you may be with what you have'. Just read it and find your own lesson...
This book really gave me a lot of diffrent emotions. From one side i was amazed by the way which mrs.Schmitt had chosen to show how precious is human life... Full of situations where money and beauty are the most important things and this young "sth" without any respect, talents, beauty, money.... From the other side i was really shocked by this fantasy and realistic visions of derstuction of human body ...And this ugly love. Raly this book is worth to read
So not my thing, I am into arts but not a dystopian cheap one ! Sorry Schmitt, but not this time.
It's been a long time since I came across such powerful contemporary writing. Although the book is, in a way, very easy and readable, it is far from superficial or flat. It exposes vanity up to its last hues and consequences and calls for accepting the humility of the human nature. It is a book with a clear message, one that is so rarely heard nowadays: stops searching for perfection and vain beauty inside yourself, and look for the beauty around you, in the universe. All this, wrapped up in fin...
