I told my coworkers, "I just read a comedy about suicide," and now they think I'm nuts. But this is hilarious! I had to keep reminding myself that this is set in Germany because the feel of it is very much New jersey. It makes me wonder how much I missed out on when I lived in Germany back in the 80s because I couldn't speak the language. These people could be my family. The only problem I had with it was I wanted the main character to stand up to her overbearing family more, but that's a small t...
I can't believe I took so long to finally read this as it caught my attention from the moment I started reading to the end. Gerri is an incredible character and very relatable, I was with her from the start and why she contemplated suicide was tragic het realistic. I really liked the goodbye letters as they were just pure honest and a lot of fun to read even if the reasons behind them are tragic. The amount of planning and the way it failed, what happens after was interesting to read and I wasn'...
5 StarsReviewed on: 5171 Miles Book BlogAlthough Für jede Lösung ein Problem is a German book, this novel was translated into English in 2013: For Every Solution, A Problem. Please check out the English review of my blogging partner Ashley here.
This is my first audiobook completely listened at in German. I understood most of it (or so I believe). I'll have to read it in English too, just to make sure I did understand it correctly.
Read full review at: 5171 Miles Book Blog. This was one of the most fun reading experiences I have ever had, because Sabrina (my blogging partner) chose to read her German copy and I read the translated-to-English copy. It was entertaining to discover how certain topics were translated and how they compared. Surprising to me was the complete accuracy within the English copy, which garners some praise. Before I get too far ahead of myself, let me give you some insight into what this novel is about:...
I don't do a good reads review for every book I read but I make the exception for this one. I love the idea of this story, imagine writing a personal and harshly honest letter to the people in your life planning to kill yourself, then you don't die. You then have to face each of these people and make some sort of amends or burn the bridge completely. This is the English version of a German book, beyond the sporadic German references and the obviously German names there isn't anything that would
For those who only looked at the book synopsis you may think this would be your typical chick lit style novel. You would be wrong. This novel written by Kerstin Gier is more like a black comedy chick lit novel. The main character in this novel, Gerri, is single and writes for a popular romantic German series. However, she is constantly being forced to lie about what she does due to her parents being ashamed of her career and her singleness. Also when she compares herself to her friends and siste...
Original review on my blogFrom the synopsis, I expected a bit more depression drama than there really was in the book. I wasn’t necessary disappointed by the lack of depressive talk, more surprised. I would expect that if life before trying to commit suicide was hell, life after definitely wouldn’t be any better. Yet somehow (and it makes sense) it is. I quite enjoy Gier’s writing. It’s easy to follow, simple and funny. Even something like suicide can somehow be turned into something funny. Min
I loved this so much!I was a little unsure whether I would like this or not (because of the description, which sounded like something I wouldn't enjoy all that much) but I actually thought it was really funny.I love Kerstin Gier, and have now read all her books that are published in English (I hate that not more of her books are translated to English).I listened to this on audiobook, and actually managed to pay attention to what was happening most of the time. I'm usually not able to do that, bu...
Hallelujah! Julia Whelan shines through again! After giving up on a previous boring audiobook, I knew just where to go! My vast collection of Whelan-narrated winners! Her rare narrative skills bring everyone to vivid life. Her performance of a particular child had me laughing out loud. I can envision myself being part of the cast right there in person! Kerstin Guerrero brilliantly creates a unique, humorous and lovely family collection of quirky characters. Whelan and Guerrero are a perfect pair
When I started to write this review, I thought that this was the book that I like the least of Kerstin Gier but I have just remembered that A Castle in the Clouds was the book that I hate the most of Kerstin Gier. To be honest, I did not bother in reading the plot, I thought it would be something light and funny, as I usually expect from the books of Kerstin Gier. However, the book started with the first character thinking in committing suicide (no very funny! It was like a black comedy) and wri...
Didn't like it. Too cheesy for me. Too chicklit
The lead character can't catch a break in this book, when her well planned suicide attempt gets bungled by a past-love who has HIS best interests at heart. All of her friends and family included in the letters of truth she sends out prior to her suicide are a hoot, but I wanted to smack the hell out of her mother! C'mon, Ma! Wake up! Your daughter tried to off herself for crying out loud! How about a little empathy and less focus on her husbandless status, hmmm? The book was originally by a Germ...
Totally unmemorable chick-lit, that I will never re-read in my entire life. I am honestly so amazed that Gier wrote so much trash fiction for adults. :D
I was just browsing through a list of random books on a website of a nearby bookshop and this beauty of a book just popped up before my eyes and infiltrated my mind to a point where I had to go and buy the book. I loved the cover, I was more than drawn to the plot of the book and I was looking for something to read in order to compensate constant studying. And it was a really good purchase! I literally devoured the book almost in one sitting and I could not believe how smoothly written it was.Th...
This was a dark comedy about a woman who can't catch a break - even when she tries to commit suicide. Gerri has written everyone she knows a "good-bye" letter telling each person exactly what she thinks about them, sticks them in the mail, and checks into a hotel room where she plans to meet her end. A comedy of errors ensues, and all the letters are received-without the author being dead.We all know that suicide is serious business, and even though this story is pretty hilarious, it never makes...
Pages: 293My rating: 4Read other books by this author in the future: yesThis is a pretty funny book. Gerri (FMC) decides to do a suicide by taking pills. But before that she writes individual letters to her family and friends and tells them what she really thinks of them. Luckily the attempted suicide fails but the letters were send away. But now she has no home, and has to face her friends, which is pretty embarrassing because she wasn’t nice in her letters. And she has to get her life back on
This was an interesting story, and I enjoyed reading it. Several scenes made me laugh out loud or bury my head in a pillow. I read the German version and loved Gier‘s writing style. Unfortunately, I also had a couple issues which is why I can’t give this book more than two 1/2 stars. Gerri has obviously issues. After the failed suicide attempt she has to face everyone who she sent brutally honest suicide notes to. Her friends and father seem to be the only people who are generally concerned for
It’s been many years ( more than 6 years) since I read this book in my language ( Albanian) and it was amazing. The letters she wrote to her family were some of the best parts of the book. I loved how she was truthful to those letters, but if I would kill my self I wouldn’t write them, I learned from her mistakes 🤣🤣🤣. One of the letters I remember was the one she wrote to her aunt where she told the aunt about who the biological father of her son was and it wasn’t the husband. I laughed a lot an...
