The scene takes place in China, at an undeterminated time. A genuine executioner legally becomes the "murderer" of his victims, those sentenced to death. He is tried and punished in consequence of his actions. This strange anecdote imagined by Pierre Boulle is the base upon which he built this disturbing novel, with a cold and surreal atmosphere but at the same time
evoked with much realism. Why does the executioner poison these poor people since he could legally execute them a quarter of an hour later ? The whole novel holds in the mysterious mobile that encouraged the exectutioner's action and in the ingenious but vain efforts that the mandarins and the crowd make to find it out. The author offers no solution to the enigma. He hopes that the answer is implicitely present in the book and likes to rely on the subtlety of the reader to guess what the mobile of Chong the exectutioner might be.
