The red/orange artwork used to depict the mental conversations (if you can describe them like that) took my breath away. Those pages were like a spooky horror fairy tale and set such an incredible tone for me. I fell in love on the first page.
This is the one-shot introduction to X-23, Vol. 1: The Killing Dream. And it doesn't suck.I've loved X-23 since reading about her in X-Force, and I've been dying to find out more of her backstory.Part of her history includes prostitution, which is where this one earns part of the Parental Advisory warning label. It doesn't get super graphic, but it tells enough of the story to make you feel a bit slimy for her.It also gives a bit of the low-down on her 'mother', and how she was raised to be an a...
I don't know how I ever managed to miss out on this one-shot by none other than Marjolie Liu, but wow, this is not something to miss out on. This issue is a beautiful issue that solely focuses on Laura, once again, trying to find the humanity within herself. Trying to find solid ground in a world that has done nothing but abuse, control and break her. The art is absolutely fantastic, too.
I suppose I could see how someone would hate this, because nothing really happens & the art is atypical. But it worked for me.
It's not easy to be X-23! This is a one-shot comic book issue, introducing the character of "X-23" to new readers, nevertheless the character has been already for a while already.Creative Team:Writer: Marjorie LiuIllustrators: Filipe Andrade & Nuno Alves BORN (NOT) FREE I am bigger than the bars. Nothing can hold me.X-23 aka Laura Kinney is an experiment to develop the "perfect killing machine".They used DNA material of Wolverine to create her, however they expected a man, but they got her.
'Born with murder in her blood.'Whoa, as if her origin wasn't already so tragic they had to make it even more so by revealing some disturbing parts of it. Damn.Loved the trippy dream sequences, though. The art made for such good visual treat.
Well this is a moody, interesting little thing. It's more or less a place holder or introduction for a series that follows. So it's short. And atmospheric. And different. And gives you a little more X-23 back story. There isn't a whole lot here. But what is here makes me curious to proceed.
Emotional one shot that sets up the series perfectly.I liked this one shot, it was deep and to the point, it focused on the thing that mattered most, the struggle of Laura and her past. I like the pieces it set up the quiet character moments between her friends and her and Logan holding her hand in the end, it's beautiful. I also loved the dream sequences as they were visually interesting. Laura has gone through so much, I really want her to finally find her happy place, I feel for her very much...
This remains one of my favourite X-23 pieces of all time, and it is such a shame to me that it was never collected in a trade paperback - I think if it had been collected with The Killing Dream, it would have offered some good context to that storyline AND given us a good view of Laura's state of mind prior to leaving the X-Men, especially given that the events in this one shot directly effect The Killing Dream. It feels a little strange to read it now, nine years after its release, and seeing La...
Looks not promising from this one shot, but lets try the series
Laura was born a slave. She was kept in a cage and feared by her creators. She's a weapon and she knows it. Laura fled from an owner, to a pimp, and now to the X-Men. She wonders if she is free or still a slave in a cage.X-23's Women of Marvel One Shot is a bloody dreary affair.Apparently at some point Laura became a prostitute as well, which is terrible because the poor girl's life had been bad enough. She's with Wolverine in a city recounting her life and running into old friends. The last time...
The characters don't fit their typical personas, the art is not good and kind of hurts the eyes, and the story, such that it is, is pretentious. My least favorite comic for X-23, and since I've started reading comics again.
