In 1587, a group of English settlers sailed for the fledgling colony established at Roanoke. Among them was expectant mother Eleanor Dare, who gave birth to the first English baby born in the New World. But the fledgling colony couldn't survive for long without help. The English garrison they'd expected to meet had vanished; the settlers found only a single skeleton remaining. Drought, sickness, harsh winter, and trouble with the nearby Native American tribes began to take their toll on the colonists.

As a last resort, Eleanor's father sailed for England in 1588 to gather more men and supplies. But when he returned in 1590, the entire colony had vanished. On a fence post nearby, only a single word was carved: CROATOAN.

What did it mean? Were the settlers murdered by the Croatoan tribe? Did they abandon the colony to seek shelter away from Roanoke Island? Or did something more sinister happen...something the colonists were powerless to fight?
