The Colonel's Lady (a trilogy:The Ballad of the Wounded Maiden)

The Colonel's Lady (a trilogy:The Ballad of the Wounded Maiden)

Raul Reyes
0/5 ( ratings)
In the trilogy The Ballad of The Wounded Maiden, Colonel A.C. Hook, patriarch of the Hook family begins his career as a street brawler, fighting for money on the waterfront.

In Book One, "The Colonel's Lady," we find him rising to prominence to a position of wealth and power. After four years of bravery, he emerges from the Civil War a hero, a man who in the view of his admirers, especially the young ladies of marriageable age, could do no wrong— that is, until that day he came riding into town with HER riding behind him, her arms wrapped around his waist, staring with wonder at everything around her— a young barefoot girl, "mountain trash", but one radiating an uncommon beauty even dressed as she was in a faded cotton dress and in her bare feet.

Though despised by all the town for his actions, the Colonel not only takes Lila as his mistress anyway, but arranges for her transformation from a mountain flower to an orchid of grace and rare social accomplishments that defies all her detractors.

All this only to betray her!

It is she who is the "wounded maiden" of the trilogy. Her mountain pride has been wounded to the core, and she flees to her mountain home, swearing in her fury to "make it straight" no matter how long it takes.

It is this saga of the Hook family over three generations and the revenge "the mountain lass" exacts upon his progeny in Book Two and Three that comprises the three works of The Ballad of the Wounded Maiden.
