HMS Dreadnought, the first of a new type of battleship has been launched, is in service, and anchored in the Cromarty Firth in Scotland. Two of her crew go missing and the Admiralty contact Scotland Yard to investigate their disappearance. The enquiry is passed to the Glasgow Police Force who assign Detective Chief Inspector `Dandy` MacLean. He leaves with his assistant for Inverness assuming that this work should be fairly routine.
Meanwhile, U3, third in a line of new German submarines sails for the North of Scotland to conduct final tests on a revolutionary sonar development capable of determining the course and outcome of any future conflict. Germany has long since embedded thie agents in the local communities awaiting such an opportunity.
