It is Yuletide during a wicked winter of deep snow and crisp ice. Enemies from Grockelheim threaten the midland kingdom. Prince Darragh is kidnapped by Muroc and the great heirloom is stolen.
Two of his five brothers, Klaus and Jack, seek for him in the wilds. They are ambushed, but escape only to witness the sacrificial murder of Darragh before fleeing for their lives. In a second and more deadly ambush Jack is drawn into an enchantment of immortality. Klaus swears an oath of vengeance which he fulfils by slaying Ofermod, Chieftain of the Muroc, and recovering the heirloom. Klaus is wounded, but gains healing and comfort in the Dream World.
The seasons pass bringing around the time of feasting. The midland folk gather in their fortress. There is great joy at the defeat of their enemies, mixed with deep sadness at the fate of Darragh. The adventure seems to be over. None of the brothers understands this experience has prepared them to achieve greater things, for they have yet to meet the Wanderer.
