NEIL'S WAR

NEIL'S WAR

Neil Murphy
5/5 ( ratings)
Neil's War is the autobiographical tale of Neil, a Sheffield lad who is evacuated to Ireland at the outbreak of the last war to escape the bombing. Once landed, a reign of chaos is visited on the Emerald Isle. Because of his English accent, the Irish Guardai exonerate him from suspicion when, at the behest of an IRA 'keeper' he plants a bomb on an old English war memorial. Subsequently he helps to run a brothel down at the docks, gets involved in an arson attack on a city store and, through his mentor, feeds information to the German Abwehr which results in the torpedoing of an 'Irish' spy ship. Exported back to England at the behest of the despairing Irish government, the trail of chaos continues in wartime Britain. Again, his brothel running propensities come to the fore and when the police step in he is exiled to Westmoreland only to be speedily expelled by the military after becoming involved in an escape plot at an Italian POW camp. The story is a riotous romp and was selected by the 'Sheffield Star' for serialisation last year.
