The rain in the forecast was coming down as ice pellets. Grumbling, Marla put on her winter coat, gloves, hat, and ear muffs. “Winter is not my favorite season especially when it’s bitter cold and windy!” Pulling out of the driveway Marla’s car slipped and slid in a fish tail as she entered the street. “Guess I’d better pay attention to my driving. The streets are like a skating rink!” That thought took Marla back to her childhood growing up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. They had a small pond in the cow pasture that froze almost solid every winter. Marla and her brother would bundle up in so many layers of clothing they almost couldn’t move, put on their ice skates and spend the afternoon skating and making figure 8’s all over the ice. “I don’t want to make any 8’s on my way to The Chocolate Kiss!” Her attention returned to her driving. Sliding to a stop at the first stop sign, Marla barely stayed on her side of the intersection. Luckily for her there wasn’t much traffic on Honeysuckle Road this early in the morning. She was determined to be the first one at her chocolate shoppe today. It was difficult to get there ahead of her right hand lady, Georgia. Ever since she married Alvin, Georgia was the first one at the shoppe every day. Marla wasn’t exactly sure why this was true, but today she wanted to win the unspoken contest of ‘first one there gets to open the shoppe’.
Sliding into her own personal parking space behind the shoppe Marla almost bumped the ‘Reserved for Chocolate Queen’ sign. It was a joke between Marla and her staff. They put it up after her first year anniversary. Running a small business in a small town in rural Wisconsin was a challenge, especially to make a profit. But Marla had been successful from the very beginning thanks to her connection with her guardian angel, Ben. And of course, everyone’s love of chocolate! There was a secret to how her chocolate was made and that is what created all of her repeat customers from across the United States! Hillary had done some incredible internet marketing which accounted for more than half the sales. Her dream of creating a smooth running, successful business had come true. Now she was ready to accomplish her next mission. One that she prayed would be her legacy for Spartanville in years to come.
Opening the door, Marla carefully stepped out of the car, knowing that there was a glare of ice here as well. Before she could unlock the back door of the shoppe, Georgia’s car slid into the space next to hers. She had won, but by only 30 seconds! Georgia groaned when she pulled into the parking space, “Oh, well! There’s always tomorrow.” Their unspoken contest was all in good fun.
