When sitting down to read Playground, one might expect a Scandinavian noir silimar to Kepler's books about Detective Joona Linna. However, Playground is very different from the rest of the bunch. Most of the book takes place in a limbo between the lands of the living and the dead. The bleak world is masterfully described and fascinating due to its roots in Chinese culture. As in the Joona Linna books, Playground focuses on the evil of mankind by showing how injustice continues beyond the grave, b...
Bloody hell, what an exciting mess.Jasmin-Pascal Anderson, former military, has a car accident, and (story heavily shortened) in a coma dreams or experiences a world in which people get a chance to go back to the living. This world appears as very real/ surreal. It takes Jasmin some extended fighting, trying to get away, with her five year old son, from many hostilities. JM
For me this book is a definite 6 stars out of 5 possible :-).This one is not a typical Joona Linna book, if you are looking for another one like that then look for something else. But if you like lars Kepler books and are open minded ( for example to science fiction ) then you most probably will agree with me.If you read reviews for this book it is either 5 stars or 1-2 stars people give, unfortunately the group who agrees with me, is smaller and unfortunately I think we will not see more from t...
Even though this was meant to be thriller, it was not especially thrilling. Maybe because I read it over such a long period of time, I didn't get properly into it.
If you expect this book to be like Kepler's previous books, you will be disappointed. I did not expect that, but I was still disappointed. There was nothing in this story that made me want to stick around to see the end of it, so...I didn't. I didn't finish it. What annoyed me the most was probably all the descriptions of the people and scenery in the death realm, which just felt extremly unneccessary and tedious. Even if this is clearly a work of fiction, I still want the story to feel real whe...
At first I wanted to give the book 5 stars becauss of the very intriguing concept, but in the end it kind of dissapointed me with its chase-like plot, I think it could have dove into much more interesting areas..shame. But in overall it was good, I was not bored.
A very different Kind of Story from Kepler, not bad but I definitely like the Joona Linna series a lot better.
At first I was all "WOW!" and then just sort of "MEH" ... after reading my way through all the Linna books, I didn't expect a book like this. Maybe it was the Czech translation (which had some horrible grammar errors, too) or maybe it's a topic the writer duo should stay away from - but after barely 100 pages, I started losing interest. I did finish the book but got really impatient towards the end to finally put it behind me. I hope the latest Linna book is nothing like this one.
The idea is very good, and the story is ok, but I didn't feel anything. Maybe it's because it's a translation from swedish, I don't know. But still, I expected a lot more from this book. After reading the synopsis, I really thought that I was in for a ride, but nop, nothing! I don't know if this novel is representative of there other books: please let me know if it's so or not.I don't want to spoil anything, but the ending, in my humble opinion, was not good either.
Worst book I have read in a long time. It had an interesting premise, but the plot turned out such a mess that I barely finished this one.
This book talks about the place you go when you die. I never read anything related to this before but I really loved it! The book described really well how this city looked like, how it works, all the characters and all the adventures, what humans are capable of doing even when they're dead... I really got into the story and it made me feel fear and sadness, I almost cried at some point. However, I think part of the reason that made me love the book so much is because I didn't have high expectat...
Very entertaining story. It's hard to stop 🛑 📖 . The authors are famous by their detective books but this time science fiction taking place in after death world is rather interesting. Of course, crime fans will be disappointed but if love ❤️ thriller and action that's book for you.
This is something new from the author Kepler who usually sticks to writing true crime. In this book you get to meet the unknown and it has a more "fantasy" approach than Kepler´s typical monotone character. It was exiting to read and i enjoyed it. Still it is not as good as Keplers usually writing and i was somehow chocked that it didn't meet up to that standard. Its worth reading and compared to many other "book-alikes" (look-alikes synonym) its a good book. As usual, the score i provide here i...
I read this book in 7h30mins and it was nothing I’ve ever read before. The story was very intriguing and it completly hooked me. Though it’s a bit slow in the beginning as you’re not sure when the final fight is supposed to happen which is both postive and negative since it kept me on my toes at the same time wanting to just skip to the part of importance. One thing I’m a little disappointed is that I didn’t feel that the main protagonist’s and her love interest made a deep enough connection in
Comparing the book with other Lars Keplar books this only gets 3/5 stars. It was hard going through the first half of the book, was really dissapointed, because this is the last Lars Keplar book I havent had read. But the second half of the book picked it up in terms of action and excitement. Though the plot was predictable I had a great time reading the second part of the book. FOR THE PEOPLE STARTING TO READ Lars Kepler. DEFINITELY don't start with this one. But a must read for the Lars Kepler...
What a miserable read. The writing is good - It's Lars Kepler after all - but even that doesn't save the terrible story. It might just be my taste. I found the characters annoying and the plot... well, miserable is the only word that comes to mind. Gave up on it in the part where they're about to start the fight in the playground. Terrible.
After a mission in Kosovo goes wrong, Jasmin doesn't need to wonder where people go after they die. She knows. In a chinese looking city full of boats, people await to follow their journey to their eternal rest or to return to life. When Jasmin, her mother and Dante, her five year old son, get into a car crash that kills Jasmin's mother and herself and leaves Dante seriously injured, Jasmin goes back to the city and meets Ting, with whom she begins to share a strong connection, and, with his help...
This book is set on what we believe it's the afterlife.Being an off-and-on-again believer of "something after this life", I embrace all that can give me a glimpse of what others envision. This book left me depressed. The weak are destined to be pray in the purgatory as they were while living.I though purgatory was like a waiting room: no good or bad, no judgement, turns out not in this book.In this halfway world we can hope to clear our bad deeds and still gain heaven but the cost... Good souls ar...
I've quite enjoyed the previous novels about Joona Linna published under the pseudonym Lars Kepler. I knew this book wasn't a police procedural novel like the Linna books, and knew it would be different, but I didn't expect it to be quite as tedious as it turned out to be. The idea about the afterlife is interesting and the book starts out ok. However, after a while the detailed descriptions of the afterworld and the endless fighting just becomes boring. I forced myself to finish the story, but
I was expecting it to be someting like the Joona Linna series, but it was competely different. The Joona series are so interesting and quick reads, but this felt like dragging me to the end. Its sad because I liked the idea of this book, just the execution wasnt that good. Also, I disliked the characters, especially the main lady - Jasmin. And if you werent afraid of the afterlife before, this book will make you worried :D
