This was much much better than Kaninjägaren!I say this even though I hate the trope when the villain everyone thought was dead comes back. Even though for the reader it was sooooo effing obvious they were never dead. Like they never found Jurek's body when Saga shot him. Body suddenly turns up a year later by some dude who apparently burned the body (but took photos of it) but kept a finger. So with only one finger remaining everyone is like "omg he really is dead thank fucking god"Only us smart...
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for the ARC of this dark Swedish thriller in return for an honest review. Lars Kepler is the pen name for a Swedish couple who have written the very popular Joona Linni series. Lazarus is the 7th book featuring the dour, perceptive, and troubled Detective, Joona Linni. I read the first three books in the series years ago and thought they were suspenseful crime thrillers with well-constructed plots. At the time, I was hoping for a leading character as memorable a...
I was over the moon when I found this title in the category 'read now' on Netgalley. Although I still haven't read all Joona Linna books, I'm a big fan of this series. The stories may be not so very different from other Nordic noir books, the characters certainly are. As the title makes clear, we are talking about the resurrection of someone. Someone who was killed by Saga Bauer. She swears she hit him three times and she even tracked down his unofficial graveside. Unfortunately, it looks like J...
This might come across more as a love letter to LAZARUS but I’m ok with that! This book was incredible in every way possible and my mind is blown by the talent that is Lars Kepler. I highly, highly recommend reading THE SANDMAN before this one. Not only will you get spoiled for the entire Sandman plot, but you will also miss out on the whole story behind Joona Linna and the serial killer Jurek Walter. I’m so hesitant to discuss any of the plot of LAZARUS as I don’t want to spoil anything, but ju...
You can read more of my reviews at my blog The Book Chick.Lazarus has not yet been translated to English but Lars Kepler and the series about Joona Linna is highly popular. That’s why I do not think it will be long before it have been translated. Just be patience. The 7th book about the Swedish/Finish cop Joona Linna is finally here. I have been waiting for this one since June. Joona is finally back and trying to take control over his life. There is finally some good things happening when it all...
This is my second Lars Kepler book, the first one being The Rabbit Hunter which was a phenomenal read, hands down! Though I did not read the series in order, the book worked well for me as a stand alone. Many actually recommends reading The Sandman first to really understand the characters more in this book 7.In this installment, the vicious killer that is Jurek Walter is probably not dead as they had assumed he was, after a series of unusual murders leads Joona back to Jurek. As usual, Joona is...
This dude will just not go away. This one was definitely very dramatic and the ending was very tense. I have no idea where this series is going from here (though the ending definitely gives a hint) but I'm excited to pick up my ARC and see what happens.
In a literary world where there are serial killers running amuck, Lazarus gives us a serial killer story so horrifying, so harrowing, so terrifying, that you may never sleep again -- at least with eyes closed. Saga plugged Jurgen Walter three times, his body washed away, his remains were found, and identified by DNA. Yet, Joona Linna doesn't believe it. He has made preparations because he knows that if Jurgen ever rises from the dead, his revenge at the Swedish police who took him down will be u...
Remember the Friends episode, when Joey hides "The Shining" (and later "Little Women", but that's another story!) in the freezer? Yes, this was how I felt about this book - I had to leave it in the living room every evening, as it was definitely NOT bedside reading. I may have become a softie, but it was really scary...but at the same time so well written that I simply couldn't put it away. Joona Linna and Saga Bauer are simply such effective characters - and this book is high paced to the point...
Jurek Walter is back. After finding similarities between murders found all around Europe, Joona Linna is convinced of this. Others think he's imagining things. After all, Saga Bauer shot and killed Jurek. DNA evidence from washed up body parts were connected to Jurek - so how could he possibly be alive? Joona knows that if this is the case, all his loved ones will die horribly - buried alive. So he mobilizes to prevent this. Yet his success is dependent on being believed. This is another riveting...
I've always been a huge fan of the Joona Linna series but this one just wasn't for me. I was expecting to be introduced to a new criminal mastermind who would cause somekind of chaos but instead it was just the same old criminal kidnapping and killing people. Yeah, the book was well written but I felt like the plot was in too many places at the same time and the story just didn't do justice to the series itself.
Shoutout to Lars Kepler for repeatedly ripping my heart out with this book 🥲 I AM NOT OKAYWow this book. I know I’ve said this a million times before, but nobody can do it like Kepler can. This husband and wife duo absolutely nails it every. single. time. 👏🏼 I am so in love with this series and it continues to get even better. If you’re a longtime reader of the series, be prepared for this one because it is so emotionally taxing in every way possible. Not only are you so attached to each of the
My first book by Lars Kepler (this is actually a pen name for husband and wife team Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril). Although this was the seventh book in the Joona Linna series, it gave enough background so that it could easily stand alone - thank goodness since I hadn't read the others! I'm sure starting from the beginning of the series would be best in order to understand all the background nuances - I may go back and read the others because this was good!Joona Linna is a Sw...
I think this book belongs in a new genre - Nordic ultra noir. It was so very, very dark! I’ve read a lot of thrillers about killers but this guy was really something else. This is also book 7 of a series. I haven’t read any of the others (I know, I know it’s against my ‘rules’) but I might go back to the start now. Having heard lots of good things, I really wanted to try this series and I’m so glad I did! I floundered a little at the start because clearly, this story began in at least one, more
Disappointed, so disappointed. As soon as Joona got the idea that Jurek Walter might be behind the murders around Europe I couldn't help but groan. This book made Jurek seem like a goddamn wizard, he was somehow able to know every single detail about everyone and everything, even though he had now other companions than the weird big fella with the earrings. And what on earth was going on with him. The entire book I was just hoping to get some reasonable backstory for him, but nope, he was just th...
2,6/5Quality of writing: 3Plot development: 3Pace: 2Characters: 3Enjoyability: 2Ease of reading: 3I was really, really, really hoping this would blow my socks off. I was excited and I was ready to read some quality mystery thriller! Maybe next time? Maybe I shouldn't have started with the 7th book in the series?First third of Lazarus was really good. I found myself just sitting down and reading and reading and reading. Yes, the language seemed a bit simple in places (and complicated in others) a...
Alexander and Alexandra Ahndoril have spoiled us throughout their writing career with their fascinating, high-octane thrillers of the notorious Joona Linna series and they never fail to amaze their loyal fans with their great stories and amazing plotlines. Lazarus is the seventh installment in this great series written by the Swedish married duo and one of the best as far as plot and characterization are concerned. Furthermore, this novel signals the return of one of the most terrifying villain
I find myself excited whenever a new novel by Lars Kepler makes its way to print in English, as I can be assured of a strong story that is not lost when translated. This novel was not a disappointment, as Joona Linna is back to fight another serial killer, but this time there’s a twist. Superintendent Joona Linna continues to hold his coveted position within Sweden’s National Crime Division, though he is rocked when he discovers that his former wife’s head has been discovered in a freezer. The p...
This is the 7th book in the Joona Linna series by Swedish husband and wife team Alexander and Alexandra Ahndoril, better known as Lars Kepler. This book once again features Linna’s nemesis, Jurek Walter and in my opinion spoilt my enjoyment with the story continuing. I would have preferred a complete new case and suspect. The story is fast paced with short punchy chapters but I feel the story and possibly the series is becoming a little tired. I hope the authors return can return to the consisten...
