Victory in Europe - A People's History of the Second World War

Victory in Europe - A People's History of the Second World War

Jeffrey T. Owens
5/5 ( ratings)
For the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe in the Second World War in May 2015, I have written a book in commemoration of this historic event. My manuscript is nearly 275,000 words and is just over 700 pages in print. My book is now available on Amazon.com.

This is not just another book on World War II, but rather it is an extensive look at the entire era, including deep historical analyses of many of the nations involved. My story is purely non-fiction and is a linear narrative which progresses mostly chronologically.

I begin by taking the reader through a history of major European peoples, political and economic philosophies, struggles and revolutions ranging from Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution and the First World War to name a few.

Once past the First World War the plot of the my story begins to thicken as the nations of Europe deal with the enormous loss of life from the war and the resulting power vacuum which left many nations ripe for revolution and civil war.

By far the most violent of these revolutions was in Russia, and I spend a considerable number of pages discussing the fall of the Romanov’s, the shortfalls of the Provisional government, the rise of the Bolsheviks, the extreme violence of the civil war, and how the mere existence of a Bolshevik Russia inspired intense fear throughout much of Europe. Also I discuss at length how such fear played a critical role in the intense violence of a near civil war in Germany immediately after the First World War, in the rise of Fascism in Italy in the early 1920’s and in the development of Nazism in the southern German state of Bavaria.

Although chronological to an extent, my introduction progresses mostly thematically, with the details of major topics grouped together. Once I get into the Second World War, however, my story turns almost exclusively chronological, and constantly jumps from one end of the continent to the other to present the war to the reader in near “real time.”

I am a believer that history is people, not just names and dates. This "People's History" is highly biographical and is inundated with details on the personal lives and careers of a multitude of characters. Some are well publicized such as Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin and Hitler while others such as Andrew Cunningham, Rinehart Heydrich, Emanuel Ringelblum, or Joseph Broz Tito are often times only known to the history buff. Whether they are considered major or minor in most histories, over forty pages of my manuscript is dedicated just to personal introductions of characters alone, not to mention the coverage of those characters throughout the war.

Although biographical, my book has no shortage of intricate military details and provides a considerable amount of information on the fighting in Poland, France, Yugoslavia, Russia, Africa and Italy, as well as in the skies of Europe and in the Atlantic Ocean and throughout many of Europe’s seas. I also selected two specific campaigns which I go into exacting detail on; Stalingrad in Russia and Normandy in France. In doing so, I cover the battles from both sides, including leadership, tactics, strategies, and the day-to-day ebb and flow of combat which at times is detailed all the way down to the company level.

Still my book is not just a heavily biographical military history, but rather it is a highly comprehensive narrative of the whole war. So I go into a considerable amount of detail on the Holocaust, partisan and anti-partisan warfare, civilians, women, multiple minorities, military intelligence, and scientific breakthroughs.

I believe that anyone, whether they be veterans, family members of a veterans, history buffs, or newcomers to topic who seek to gain a holistic understanding of the Second World War will enjoy my book and learn from it. I do my best to present the story with great energy and zeal and always attempt to explain every topic thoroughly, starting with the basic concepts and building up to the details.

At no point do I ever claim to rewrite history or present any groundbreaking twists in the story-line. Rather I have written this book purely out of my passion for the time period, and in doing so I have attempted to tell the story of the Second World War in Europe in the most comprehensive and easily readable way that it has yet been done.
