Lincoln’s Land is a work of historical fiction that is set in the border region of East Tennessee and Kentucky during the American Civil War. The main character of the story is Alexander Heatherly. Alex is a farmer with a growing family. When Tennessee secedes from the Union, the Heatherly family decides to remain loyal to the Union and to President Lincoln. Alex is persuaded to become a guide to lead men in dangerous journeys to Kentucky to join the Union Army. During these trips, he has encounters with Confederate cavalry, wild animals, and the forces of nature.Alex’s father William, a slave holder and farmer, is one of the pioneer settlers of the Powell Valley of East Tennessee. The Heatherlys are typical of many families of East Tennessee and Kentucky who struggled with the issues of secession, patriotism, slavery, hardship, and the cruelty that inevitability comes with war.
