The Beaching of Whales

The Beaching of Whales

Jan David Aronson
0/5 ( ratings)
The following story is a truthful, sacrosanct and vital part of Inuit lore.
A turbulent summer storm brewing off the coast of Greenland. Sedna, the most beautiful and generous of the entire Inuit nation, was in a small boat with her father trying desperately to explain why she could not obey his wishes and marry the man her father had promised her hand in marriage. His anger turned to rage as the wind nearly capsized the two of them. His psyche went mad and he threw his own daughter overboard to save himself and right the ill equipped vessel. Sedna rose to the surface clinging to the side. Her father reached for his knife and methodically severed each of her fingers. She fell backward into the swirling waters. He managed to salvage the boat and return to shore.
As Inuit tradition goes, for her heroism, Sedna was anointed Goddess of the Sea. He fingers returned, each one symbolizing the protection of a certain mammal under her perpetual care. This is the story of how a reluctant girl became the savior of the whales and all sea mammals throughout the entire world. And how the child she was forced to give up for adoption found her at last. And followed her into the deep waters only to surface when a wrong needed to be corrected. This is the story of Sedna and her Americanized daughter and how many people become intertwined in their sometimes violent yet always compassionate quest to stop...
