It's these sort of fun but surprisingly poignant stories that make Adventure Time so good.
I this this may be the first volume of Adventure Time I've read since Ryan North stopped writing it. I've read a bunch of the side volumes (Pixel Princesses, etc etc) and not been too excited about them. I think Christopher Hastings did a nice job with this one. The characters felt pretty "on" and there were some clever stories. The artwork was solidly good. I'd read another volume by this team.
I'll always love the Ryan North Adventure Time comics but Hastings does a great job picking up the reins and taking the comic into interesting territory. This volume collects some interesting stories involving a time-traveling funhouse and a friend that everyone had somehow forgotten always having. Pretty solid adventures indeed.
This volume is a little more adventurous, with the first story playing with the confines of the comic in a creative way (that unfortunately lost a lot due to the manner of my reading the comic, but that's on me, not the book), and having lots of fun with dungeons and time. The rest focuses on Gata, a story that strays near previous Adventure Time plots (a suddenly remembered character who has supposedly always been there), but does things differently enough, and with just the right dash of emoti...
Okay this one was good but it was kinda hectic and all over the place.
Another trippy dive into an alternate reality of Ooo.
Great fun, as these graphic novels always are. A freaky hall of mirrors story, and an adventure involving a magical statue and Finn and Jake's secret sister?!
I need to go through and rate/write reviews for these, I’ve just been lazy. I felt it important to do so right now for this one though. All of the Ryan North ones were easily four stars for me right out of the gate, but I honestly haven’t loved the Hastings ones as much (ie 8 & 9). Truly though, this one was really good. Much heavier considering how he’d written the other two and still sweet and all. I really did enjoy it and I hope the rest of his stick with me as much as this one will.
Oh my glob! Another adventure that starts with disaster and takes place in... alternate realities??? Radical!!!
This one was a pretty good collection of episodes. I was particularly touched by the final chapters with the alternate universe that never was. Adventure Time was always good at hitting bittersweet notes. But I also loved the opening chapter. I love it when these comics do something creative with the presentation to tell an interesting story. The looping time magic just made this comic fun and definitely one of my favorites.
Alright, but I'm glad they're getting rid of this writer. He's no Ryan North.
This one made me cry, which I didn't think I would ever say about an Adventure Time comic. No spoilers.
The first story in this volume was incomprehensible, but the second was a rather bittersweet speculative fiction trope that worked well in this case. Finn and Jake have a sister that they do not remember, but her existence is couched in rather dangerous secrets... Great art, fun storyline - this is one of the stronger AT comics I have read, save for the weird introductory story...
