The Big Leap Forward: What did we get?

By expanding our excavation areas, we had a chance to uncover areas of metal working, galleries which were connected to parts of houses, or “offices”, and open-air courts which would have been subject to natural light, ideal for craft work. The life of a Workman can only be understood through archaeologically discovering their households, understanding the details of their work, and looking though documents such as ancient repair records that AERA had uncovered at excavation Square D9, resembling New Kingdom workmens’ town of Deir-el-Medineh, which housed the workmen who built the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, and their families. In our attempts to understand the ancient landscape and trading or street routs all through the Giza Plateau and other parts of Egypt, we have an initiative for a Virtual Giza, where we will use data collection and computer programs like 360- degree Quick Time and possibly ArcGIS to map, compare, and explore ancient Egypt!
