"You make decisions that would be perfectly rational if you were trying to escape from a POW camp."I've always been interested in the dark possibilities of "super soldier"ing, and this was a compelling exploration. It was also a compelling exploration of C-PTSD, and how trauma and anxiety affect interpersonal relationships. I liked the characters, found the plot well paced and engaging; the prose was straightforward but not plain, with an innovative use of language. There was also this sort of d...
Romance is hard when you've been engineered to obey everyone you have affection for, and also to be paranoid.
We published this - a story of super-soldiers, super-brothers, science fiction and romance
Super-soldier brothers, just trying to get along...
How to Piss Off a Failed Super-soldier by John Chu is a short story published by Book Smugglers last year. I bought it close to the release but only just got around to reading it. It's not very long — technically novelette length — and I easily read it in a single sitting. That's probably a longer blurb than strictly necessary for a story this short, so I'll skip my usual summary and jump to my thoughts. Review first posted on My Blog.Aitch was created to be a super soldier. From birth, he was treated more as an experiment than a person, tested on endlessly and trained to be the best. When Aitch finally escapes, the government wants to cover up what they were doing so the attempts on his life never stop. Now his brother, Jay, tells him there is a cure and he wants so much to believe but can he trust anyone, even Jay?Mr. Chu is a master at creating intriguing characters in well-crafted worlds in
After absolutely loving Chu's "The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere", I thought I was in for a treat here, but I came out slightly disappointed. It didn't quite click, the characters never really drew me in and their relationships were too sketchy to make sense to me. I know Chu can do better, and I will keep reading his stories.

I'm honestly not even sure what it is that I've just read. I mean I DO but... Not really? The story itself is okay, but the writing style is really weird and didn't work for me well. Too simplistic? Short sentences feel too abrupt and a little disjointed. My emotional involvement was practically nonexistent, mostly. It's just... flat. So very very flat. Well, this was a letdown. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
This was disappointing. I didn't enjoy the narrative style and I felt like I was missing information in order to fully appreciate the story.
