Brilliant! A funny, witty, engaging read that is a glimpse into another world and a fabulous joy ride of a mystery story as well. Well done!
The Prologue of Porter Girl describes the medieval founding of Old College, where the murder of a young scholar portends of evil to come. Then to the present, where Porter Girl is the first female Deputy Head Porter of the still existing Old College, a now ancient, academically elite institution. Her adventures begin on day one, as her appointment is greeted with curiosity, approbation and hostility by the various staff and academics inhabiting the rare and eccentric air of the school. As a form...
Originally titled ‘The Secret Diary of a Porter Girl’Forget Sherlock Holmes, Deputy Head Porter doesn’t do logic, but still manages to crack the case, as well as take a crack at life in Academia.Find out how the College is founded several centuries earlier, then follow DHP through her first year at Old College. Her insights are snippets to treasure.I found the storytelling style refreshing, humorous, easy to follow and immersive.See my review also at:https://www.amazon.co.uk/PorterGirl-F...
PorterGirl: First Lady of the Keys was a great read. Told from the point of view of Old College’s first female Deputy Porter, you immediately appreciate the personality of this feisty and deceptively intelligent character.Throughout the book, even when she finds herself in danger, her personality shines through and the situations are handled with a combination of humor and intrigue. I found myself cheering for the Deputy Porter as she goes from a fish out of water to gaining acceptance for the j...
A debut, a blog become novel, imaginative fiction underpinned by unique experience, a literary phenomenon I believe, Lucy Brazier, an author to look out for. No spoilers here, her guile layering intrigue, mystery, tension, threat and the bizarre laced with humour all the more enjoyable, more involving, more gob-smacking good when you think you know but don’t know what’s coming, Lucy tells a very good story. A woman, against the odds, Deputy Head Porter, the first of her kind amongst Fellows of O...
Great Concept and Fun Read that Deepens Into Societal IssuesI commend Lucy Brazier for a job well done and a unique, unusual book. The female keeper of the keys in a traditional men's British institution. A fun, yet serious read, that appeals to the mind and heart on many levels. Looking forward to future volumes. Highly recommended!
I loved this book. So funny, so well-written. I breezed through it and immediately ordered the next in the series.
Open this book and step into a different world. And so it was for PorterGirl as she stepped, an alien, into the strange new world of Old College as the new Deputy Porter. She is the first ever female to step into the shoes and bowler hat of the prestigious role.Confronted by centuries of tradition, characters who might have been there for most of that time if it were physically possible, she attempts to unravel the mysteries of secret passageways, doors, gates, bones and suspicious deaths. There...
https://kyrosmagica.wordpress.com/201...Really enjoyed this so much!I’ve had PorterGirl on my must read radar for some time. For three reasons, one it’s set in Cambridge, (and I live in Cambridge too,) and two I have enjoyed reading Lucy’s blog Porter Girl and following her. Also, my youngest daughter works part-time as a waitress in one of the colleges in Cambridge so I hear all about college life from her, and all about the sumptuous food.... So my impressions of PorterGirl... I really enjoyed
